King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands hosted the President of Germany and his partner for a dinner in The Hague on Monday. Maxima wore a lovely red gown and brought out a major jewel surprise!

The diamond and ruby necklace she wore for the dinner is the necklace from the Ruby Peacock Parure. The necklace hasn’t been seen in public for about half a century! The photo available for me to use isn’t the clearest available; click here for a much sharper view. The necklace is convertible — the scroll pieces on each side are removable.

Maxima has previously worn the tiara and brooch from the Ruby Peacock Parure in public; above, she wears it during a visit to Canada in 2015. The suite of ruby and diamond jewels was made for Queen Wilhelmina in 1897.

Queen Juliana memorably wore the necklace from the parure at her investiture in 1948. For years the set was owned/worn by Princess Irene, but it appears that the entire suite is now a part of the family’s jewelry foundation. I love it when an heirloom set returns to the royal fold!
