Royal Jewel Rewind: Prince Joachim and Princess Marie’s Wedding (Part 1)

Nine years ago today, Prince Joachim of Denmark married Marie Cavallier in Mogeltonder. Today, we’ve got two flashback posts on tap full of jewels from this royal wedding. Enjoy this look at jewels worn by the main line of the Danish royal family, plus the Norwegian and Swedish royals, and stop back for even more royal jewels later today!

Marie Cavallier, who became Princess Marie of Denmark after her wedding, wore Princess Dagmar’s Floral Tiara on her wedding day. The tiara is on long-term loan to Marie from her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. Although she has acquired another tiara to wear during her marriage, this remains her primary diadem today. A press release from the Danish court on the wedding day noted that Marie also wore “a pair of diamond earrings from Genève.”

Marie’s lace wedding gown was designed by the firm Arasa Morelli. Her tulle and lace veil had a floral design that echoed the diamond flowers in her wedding tiara.

Joachim’s mother, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, wore a tiara that she often dons at weddings: the Baden Palmette Tiara. The palmette motifs of the tiara form heart shapes, making it particularly appropriate for the occasion. She paired the tiara with diamond earrings, a diamond necklace, and a diamond brooch.

She also wore the insignia of the Order of the Elephant, the Order of the Dannebrog, and her father’s family order.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark wore the parts of the grand ruby parure for the occasion. This wedding happened not long before she had the tiara remodeled to better fit the shape of her head. She’s also wearing part of the earrings from the suite.

The large brooch was pinned to Mary’s bodice, and she wore the ruby bangle on her right wrist. A diamond ring is visible on her right hand, and her wedding and engagement rings are on her left.

Mary also wore the Order of the Elephant and her mother-in-law’s family order.

The Swedish royal family was represented at the wedding by Crown Princess Victoria. She wore the family’s four-button tiara, as well as the drops from the Connaught Diamond Tiara on a necklace. Her earrings came from Queen Josefina’s grand diamond stomacher.

On her left wrist, she wore two diamond bracelets…

Victoria pinned her father’s family order to the sash of the Order of the Elephant.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway wore her own wedding tiara, the Diamond Daisy Bandeau, for this royal wedding. She paired it with the diamond earrings that belonged to her husband’s grandmother, Crown Princess Martha.

Mette-Marit secured the sash of the Order of St. Olav with a diamond and pearl brooch. (In 2008, she didn’t have the Order of the Elephant yet; she does now.)

Mette-Marit, who was escorted by Crown Prince Haakon, also wore her father-in-law’s family order.

Princess Martha Louise also attended from Norway. She wore King Olav’s Gift Tiara with a suite of jewels — earrings, necklace, and ring — set with diamonds and milky blue stones (possibly moonstones?).

On her left hand, she also wore a ring set with a blue stone (possibly a star sapphire). She secured the sash of the Order of the Elephant with a small brooch; her father’s family order was also pinned to the bodice of her gown. Martha Louise was expecting her third child, Emma, at the time of this wedding. Sadly, she and her husband, Ari Behn, are now in the process of divorcing.

…and in a non-royal bonus, here’s a glimpse of some other wedding guests, Sir Roger Moore and his wife, Kiki Tholstrup. As I was finishing up edits to this post, I learned that Sir Roger had just passed away at the age of 89. Moore popped up occasionally at royal events, thanks to friendships with Prince Joachim of Denmark, Prince Albert II of Monaco, and the late Princess Lilian of Sweden.

Reader Mailbag: Crown Princess Mary’s New Earrings

Several readers have contacted me recently with information about the diamond fringe earrings worn by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark at the recent birthday celebrations in Norway. Turns out Mary’s been shopping the auction catalogues again!

The earrings were featured in an auction at Bruun Rasmussen held in December 2016. They were lot #545 in the auction, described in the catalogue as: “A pair of diamond ear pendants each set with
numerous brilliant-cut diamonds weighing a total of app. 9.50 ct., mounted in 18k white gold.”

The jewels may have been sold at auction, but they’re not antique; the catalogue notes state that they were made ca. 2010. The auction estimate on the earrings was approximately between $2200 and $3000.

These earrings are only Mary’s most recent purchase from Bruun Rasmussen’s auction offerings. The most notable item she’s bought so far is her Edwardian Tiara, also worn at the recent birthday celebrations in Norway.

Norwegian Royal Birthday Gala Jewels (Part 1)

The second day of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway’s joint birthday celebrations included a black-tie gala at the Opera House in Oslo. Even without tiaras, we saw some major jewels on display. Here’s a look at what the Scandinavian royals wore; we’ll recap the rest of the royal jewels in our next post!

After last night’s emerald spectacular, Queen Sonja chose quieter pearls for the gala: earrings, necklace, and bracelet.

Her white cape-coat covered a vibrant blue gown.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway wore the same diamond pendant earrings she wore last night, but this time she added her faceted red gemstone (ruby?) drops instead of pearls.

The deep red earrings were a contrast to her navy blue gown. (Also, note Crown Prince Haakon’s newly-shaven face — did you know he shaved off the beard last night during the dinner? I’m still so perplexed. We’ve been discussing the possibilities on my Twitter feed…)

Princess Martha Louise of Norway was radiant in a fun pair of multi-gem pendant earrings.

The earrings picked up on the various colors in her bright pastel gown.

Like her sister-in-law, Princess Astrid chose pearls for the opera house gala.

I’m pretty intrigued by that gem-set golden bangle on Astrid’s right wrist.

Here’s a look at Astrid’s flower-festooned pink dress. (Astrid’s escorted here by a lady-in-waiting; note the red badge she wears.)

Queen Silvia bundled up against the persistent rain, but we got a glimpse of the family’s diamond floral earrings and a diamond riviere.

Her dark patterned dress peeked out as she and King Carl XVI Gustaf arrived at the Opera House.

Crown Princess Victoria made an ill-advised earring selection for the gala, selecting a pair of exaggerated tassels. The earrings clashed with the high neckline of her floral gown. I think these earrings would be more interesting with an off-the-shoulder gown. (And without the focus-pulling flower in her hair.)

Victoria also wore a few bracelets, including a large silver cuff.

Here’s a better look at Victoria’s entire ensemble.

Princess Sofia of Sweden chose delicate gold pendant earrings, sweeping her hair aside to offer us a clearer view of the jewels.

She matched her gold earrings to a golden clutch bag.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark was also wrapped up in a cloak, but we can see Queen Alexandra’s sapphire demi-parure peeking through here.

Here we get a view of the necklace, too. I think she’s wearing the same gown and jewels that she chose for another recent gala in Norway.

The bright blue gemstone in the ring picked up the blue hues in her floral gown.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie joined the royal pack for tonight’s gala. She kept her jewelry fairly simple, wearing a pendant necklace with a blue (sapphire?) stone and glittering earrings.

Her gown, also on the simple side, looked like one of the most comfortable of the night.
