Sparkling Royal Jewels From Around the World
On Sunday, the people of Denmark will have a new monarch for the first time in more than half a century when Queen Margrethe II abdicates in favor of her son, Crown Prince Frederik. In honor of Margrethe’s remarkable reign, we’re spending the next few days looking back at the jewels she wore for some of the most important days of her life and reign—starting with her royal wedding in the spring of 1967.
On Sunday, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will hand the throne over to her elder son, Crown Prince Frederik. At the same time, her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mary, will become the custodian of three dazzling Danish royal tiaras—and an entire collection of crown jewels.
The New Year celebrations continued on Wednesday and Thursday in Denmark, with Queen Margrethe II hosting her final bejeweled receptions for the Diplomatic Corps, military officers, and other dignitaries.
