Earlier this month, we spent some time with the anchor brooches from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s jewelry box. But she’s not the only member of the Danish royal family to wear a jeweled anchor. Today, we’ve got a closer look at the anchor brooch worn by her sister, Queen Anne-Marie.

Anne-Marie’s anchor brooch is a classic, all-diamond piece. According to Bjarne Steen Jensen, the brooch was a gift to Anne-Marie from her husband, Constantine II, the last King of Greece. As Jensen points out, a maritime motif is an appropriate one for a gift from Constantine. A skilled sailor, he earned a gold medal in sailing for Greece in the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Both Greece and Denmark are countries with proud naval and maritime histories, and Anne-Marie finds plenty of appropriate occasions to wear her anchor brooch. In 2006, she chose it for a sailing awards reception in Finland.

Anne-Marie most often wears the brooches in recent years for important family events in Denmark, and she almost always pairs it with outfits in shades of blue. Here, she wears the brooch on a light blue jacket for a pre-wedding reception at Denmark’s parliament in honor of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.

In 2011, she wore the brooch for the christening of Frederik and Mary’s twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. The anchor was an especially appropriate choice, given the christening’s location at Holmens Kirke. Originally built as an anchor forge for the local shipyard, the building was later converted into a naval church. It is the burial place for some of Denmark’s great naval heroes. (It was also the place where Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik were married in 1967.)

In 2012, Anne-Marie brought out the brooch again in Denmark, pairing it with a royal blue ensemble for the Ruby Jubilee celebrations of Queen Margrethe II. On this occasion, and on many others, she wore the brooch with a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings with a floral design and pearls.

As we’ve marveled our way through the jewelry box of Queen Anne-Marie this month, I’ve had lots of questions about one piece in particular: her diamond cross pendant.

Anne-Marie, who was born a Danish princess, famously wore the cross on the day she married King Constantine II of Greece in September 1964. The diamond ornament was a gift to the eighteen-year-old princess from her parents, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark.

Here’s a closer look at the substantial pendant. Note two things in particular: the size of the yellow gold loop at the top of the cross, which allows the pendant to be worn with larger necklaces (including pearls), and the marquise-shaped adornment on that loop, which is also set with diamonds.

Anne-Marie’s time as Greece’s queen consort was short, lasting less than a decade. During that time, she wore the pendant for important gala occasions, including her royal wedding. But she also used it for formal daytime events, like the Greek royal audience with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican in April 1966. On that occasion, she wore the pendant with Queen Alexandrine’s Diamond Necklace and the Antique Corsage Tiara, both also jewels she received from her Danish family.

Today, the cross pendant still resides in Anne-Marie’s jewelry box. She doesn’t wear it often, but it does make occasional appearances. One of the more prominent recent outings for the pendant came in 2010, when her second son, Prince Nikolaos, married Tatiana Blatnik on the Greek island of Spetses.
