Commonwealth Day Jewels 2020

On Monday, the British royals gathered for the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, and we’ve got all the details on the sparkling jewels worn for the occasion.

The annual service is the largest annual inter-faith gathering in the United Kingdom. The Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, led the royal contingent. She was supported by the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

For the service, the Queen wore one of the most classic pieces in her jewelry box: the Jardine Star Brooch. The Victorian brooch, which features distinctive collet diamonds on knife-edge settings, was bequeathed to the Queen by Lady Jardine in 1981.

The Duchess of Cornwall reached for favorite pearl pieces — her pearl drop earrings and her pearl choker necklace with the large diamond-set clasp — for the service. She also wore a brooch featuring a diamond-studded knot. She wore the same jewels in December for the annual Christmas Day church service near Sandringham.

The Duchess of Cambridge looked regal in a deep scarlet ensemble for the service.

She also debuted new jewels: modern ruby and diamond earrings. Though we’d never seen the earrings before Monday’s appearance, they’re part of a coordinating set we’ve seen Kate wear before: her Mouawad Ruby and Diamond Demi-Parure.

Kate wore the necklace and bracelet from the set in December 2011 for the Sun Military Awards at the Imperial War Museum in London. On that occasion, she didn’t wear the coordinating earrings. Instead, she wore the earrings from her Diamond Cluster and Baguette Suite.

Here’s a great close-up of the ruby and diamond earrings. Note the open circle drop, the rigid pendant, and the floral diamond and ruby drop.

The service was the final official royal engagement for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Meghan wore a vibrant green outfit with matching accessories. (She’s worn several interesting pieces of jewelry over the last week; I’ll have a post later this week with a closer look at several of them.)

She also wore a favorite pair of earrings: the Snowflake Snowstorm earrings from Birks, a Canadian jewelry firm.

The royal party was rounded out by the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Sophie wore navy and white with diamond and pearl jewelry. Her earrings are from Heavenly Necklaces. The small diamond rose brooch has become one of her favorite pieces. Last year, she wore it for her official twentieth wedding anniversary portraits.

Though it wasn’t an official Commonwealth Day event, Kate also hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace on Monday evening. The gala celebrated the 25th anniversary of Place2Be, one of Kate’s patronages. The organization provides emotional support for children at an early age, with the goal that no child should face mental health difficulties alone.

Kate wore a lovely embellished blue gown that we saw previously during the 2016 royal visit to India.

For the reception, Kate accessorized with a new pair of statement earrings from Erdem.
The ’60s-esque floral earrings are made of brass, crystals, and faux pearls.

Royal Tour Jewels: William and Kate in Ireland

I’m back from my honeymoon — thanks to everyone for holding down the fort in my absence! Time to catch up on some of the current events of last week, starting with the Cambridges’ tour of Ireland.

The Duke and Duchess kicked off their first official visit to Ireland on Tuesday with a stop at the nation’s presidential residence, Aras an Uachtarain, in Dublin. There, they were greeted by President Michael D. Higgins and his wife, Sabina Coyne. The welcome continued with an audience with the country’s prime minister, Teoiseach Leo Varadkar, and his partner, Matthew Barrett. The Cambridges also laid a ceremonial wreath at the Garden of Remembrance, a memorial in Dublin dedicated to those who gave their lives for Irish independence.

For these initial engagements, Kate wore a pair of new earrings. The diamond floral studs are the Daisy Heritage style from Asprey.

On Tuesday evening, the couple attended a reception at the famous Guinness Storehouse, hosted by the British Ambassador to Ireland, Robin Barnett.

With her dazzling green gown, Kate wore a pair of golden statement earrings from H&M. This was the second outing for the earrings; Kate previously wore them in November 2018 for a Royal Foundation dinner in London.

On Wednesday, William and Kate’s engagements included a stop at Jigsaw, the National Center for Youth Mental Health in Dublin. The Cambridges’ charitable platform includes a major focus on mental health support, especially for young people. They also made a visit to Savannah House, a shelter run by Extern, a social justice organization.

During the visits, Kate wore another new pair of earrings with an appropriate design for a visit to Ireland. They feature open hoops with a shamrock charm. Our friends over at What Kate Wore have identified these as the Mini Cupid Hoops with Baby Shamrock Charms by Daniella Draper. They believe the earrings are sterling silver, but they look a bit more golden in tone to me.

Wednesday’s engagements also included a stop at the Teagasc Animal and Grassland Research Center in Grange, as well as a walk along Howth Cliff.

Here’s one more view from the couple’s stop in Howth. This angle gives you a clearer view of the curved “cupid’s arrow” design of the hoops.

Wednesday evening’s reception, hosted by Ireland’s deputy prime minister, Simon Coveney, was held at Ireland’s Museum of Literature on St. Stephen’s Green.

During the reception, Kate wore a pair of gold-toned earrings featuring an open circle stud and a larger twisted gold hoop.

For the final day of the trip, the Cambridges headed to Galway, where they spent their Thursday taking in a variety of cultural activities. During a meeting with Galway Community Circus performers, local artists and young musicians, William even got to show off his juggling skills.

The neckline of Kate’s dress gave us a good view of her necklace. This simple shamrock pendant necklace, also by Daniella Draper, coordinates with the earrings Kate debuted during the tour.

It wouldn’t be a Cambridge royal visit without a sports demonstration, would it? William and Kate stopped by the Salthill Knocknacarra GAA Club to try their hand at Gaelic football and hurling.

Kate again reached for the Daniella Draper shamrock earrings for this sporty engagement.

And that’s a wrap on the royal jewelry from this official visit! What did you think of Kate’s choices for her first official trip to Ireland? (And do you think we’ll see those shamrock earrings again next week on St. Patrick’s Day?)
