We’ve had a look at two of the modern sets of jewelry owned by our Magpie of the Month, Queen Sonja of Norway, and today, we’re shining the spotlight on a third. But while the first two sets are extremely modern in execution, the third set, her amethyst parure, has echoes of heirloom pieces in its design.

The amethyst and diamond parure was a gift to Queen Sonja from her husband, King Harald V of Norway. The set consists of several pieces: a convertible necklace/tiara, a pair of earrings with removable drops, two bracelets that can be combined and worn together as a second necklace, and a brooch that can also be attached as a part of the bracelet-necklace. Harald clearly values versatility in the jewelry sets that he gifts to his wife!

Sonja wore the entire set at the gala held the night before the wedding of her son, Crown Prince Haakon, in 2001. She pinned the brooch to the center of her gown’s neckline, and she stacked both bracelets on her right arm.

For years, the queen was the primary wearer of this piece, sporting it as both a necklace and a tiara. In recent years, however, she appears to have either given or permanently loaned the parure to her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Mette-Marit. (There’s some speculation that it might have a gift in celebration of the birth of Mette-Marit’s daughter and the heir to the throne, Princess Ingrid Alexandra.)

The crown princess generally wears the piece as a tiara, though she only sometimes uses the combined pair of bracelets to make a matching necklace. At the Swedish royal wedding in 2013, for example, she wore a capelet over her dress that made the addition of a necklace a bit of a moot point.

One other Norwegian royal woman has also worn the tiara, however: Princess Märtha Louise donned the amethyst parure, including the tiara and the bracelet-necklace, at the 2010 wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. While Mette-Marit features sleek hairstyles, Märtha Louise backed this tall necklace tiara with an impressive hairstyle, providing the amethysts with a substantial brunette backdrop.

We’ve talked quite a bit about the magnificent nineteenth-century parure of emerald and diamond jewels owned today by the Norwegian royal family. That set, which includes a striking tiara with a geometric design, is worn quite often by Queen Sonja of Norway at gala events. But that’s not the only set of emerald jewelry that our Magpie of the Month wears. She also has a smaller demi-parure of emerald and diamond jewelry.

The first public appearance of this modern jewelry set seems to have been at the gala event held in Trondheim on the night before Princess Martha Louise’s wedding in 2002. Sonja paired the necklace and earrings with a mint green gown with bright pink accents.

The set apparently includes only earrings and a necklace, as Sonja wore diamond bracelets with the demi-parure for that gala event. Unlike some of Sonja’s other modern jewelry, the source of the set has never been made clear.

However, the design of the set has led some to speculate that it may have been a gift from Middle Eastern royals, who are renowned for lavishing precious gems on royals during state and official visits. The necklace includes several strands of emerald beads interspersed with diamond elements reminiscient of sets of diamond clips from the first half of the twentieth century. The earrings also feature emerald beads, dangling in three strands from a diamond element.

In De Kongelige Juveler, the wonderful documentary on royal jewelry, Queen Silvia of Sweden remarked that emerald jewelry “fits [Queen Sonja] very well, because it’s her colors.” Indeed, Sonja has three major sets of green jewels to choose from for various events: the magnificent historic emerald parure, the modern gold set with the green tourmalines, and this demi-parure. Which set of Sonja’s green gems is your favorite?

It’s a new month, which means it’s time for a new Magpie of the Month here at The Court Jeweller! This July, we’re peeking into the jewelry box of Queen Sonja of Norway, who (along with America!) celebrates her birthday tomorrow. And today, we’re starting our month of Sonja with one of the most interesting and divisive sets of jewelry in her collection: her modern gold parure.

The modern gold set is one of the newest additions to the Norwegian royal collection, and it certainly lives up to its name. It’s been likened to costume jewelry from a science fiction film, or something unearthed from the vaults of a long-forgotten warrior queen. But for Sonja, this parure has more sentimental value: it was a present from King Harald V to Queen Sonja to mark her sixtieth birthday in 1997.

The set includes several pieces. The tiara is a rare example of one set in yellow gold. There are diamonds set in the spaces between the golden slats that make up the tiara’s band. The tiara is not only an unusual piece but also a highly versatile one. The center of the tiara has three interchangeable elements: a green tourmaline surrounded by diamonds, a golden element set with larger diamonds, or an orange topaz element.

Because the tiara can be worn three different ways, it needs to have multiple pieces of coordinating jewelry to go with each “look.” You can see in the pictures in this post alone that Sonja has three pairs of earrings that coordinate directly with the tiara — a dangling pair of orange topaz earrings, a rectangular pair of gold earrings with small diamonds, and a pair of large green tourmaline earrings.

There’s also a choker that mirrors the gold and diamond pattern of the tiara with a central orange topaz stone, plus a green tourmaline necklace that mimics the shape of the green tourmaline that can be swapped into the center of the tiara. When she wears the gold and diamond version of the tiara, she can also change out the orange topaz element in the choker for a diamond-and-gold piece. And on top of all of that, she’s also worn the topaz version of the tiara with another pair of earrings and a necklace made of gold with orange-colored stones.

To this day, Queen Sonja is the only member of the family who has been photographed wearing this parure. It’s tough for me to imagine someone like Crown Princess Mette-Marit pulling off a set like this, though I think Princess Martha Louise might be up to the task. It will be interesting to see whether any other Norwegian royal ladies ever end up borrowing this parure, or whether it will continue to be worn exclusively by Sonja.
