Dutch Visit to New Zealand: State Dinner in Wellington

Hold on to your hats, magpies: Queen Maxima brought some major sparkle with her to Wellington for tonight’s state dinner!

Although the dinner was black tie, Maxima popped on a tiara anyway. (Love her for that!) This is the all-diamond version of Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara, ordered by King Willem III for his wife (that’d be Queen Emma) in 1890. He died just before the tiara was delivered to Emma at the palace.

Here’s a good close-up of the tiara from tonight’s dinner. It can also be worn with diamond stars attached to the top, and the central diamond of each of the three rosettes can be swapped for rubies. (I don’t love it in ruby form, and I’m glad Maxima resisted the temptation to match the tiara to her gown!)

Maxima also wore another piece of jewelry with links to Willem III: Queen Wilhelmina’s diamond earrings. These were given to her by her father (that’d be King Willem) as a ninth (yes, ninth) birthday present in 1889. She never wore them; her daughter, Queen Juliana, is the first person to have been photographed in them. (Sidenote: how fab does Max’s hair look??? I don’t usually love tiaras worn with the hair down, but this is just gorgeous.)

And here’s a look at Maxima’s entire ensemble. The diamond scroll/floral brooch is also from Queen Wilhelmina’s collection, and Maxima is wearing her diamond wedding and family initial bracelets. She’s also wearing the miniature ribbon and badge of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.

The Dutch royal couple wrapped up their visit to Australia last week, and now they’re embarking on a three-day state visit to a neighboring country, New Zealand. Here’s a look at Queen Maxima’s jewelry from the welcoming ceremonies.

8. Princess Anne of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, now the Dowager Duchess of Calabria, wore a lovely suite of gray pearls to attend a book launch in Madrid on Wednesday.

7. As the imperial family mourns the death of Prince Mikasa, Empress Michiko wore a suite of black jewelry on October 27 in Tokyo.

5. And it’s a tie for fifth, too! Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has worn a series of brooches this week, including her ruby and diamond floral brooch (which she also repeated at an evening palace reception), her Flower Basket Brooch, and the Grima Ruby Brooch. 3. To welcome Colombia’s first couple to London, the Duchess of Cornwall wore her gorgeous diamond Prince of Wales Feather brooch with its cabochon emerald pendant drop. (More jewels from this event over here!)

1. And it’s a collective vote for first place, too: the British royal ladies dressed up for the Colombian state banquet on Tuesday. Queen Elizabeth II wore her sapphires; Camilla wore the Greville Tiara with diamond earrings and a pearl necklace; the Duchess of Gloucester wore the Iveagh Tiara with pearls (and the honeysuckle tiara at the next evening’s Guildhall banquet); and Princess Alexandra wore a tiara, likely the Ogilvy.
