King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 70th Birthday (Te Deum and Lunch)

Today, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden celebrates his 70th birthday, and royals from around the world gathered for a balcony appearance, a service of thanksgiving, and a luncheon. Let’s have a look at some of the daytime jewels on show…

Queen Silvia wore earrings with pink gemstones, a floral brooch set with diamonds (and possibly coral?), and a multi-stranded pearl bracelet.

Here’s another look at the bracelet, plus Silvia’s ring. You can also see a stack of gold bracelets on her left wrist.

Crown Princess Victoria wore a lovely pair of diamond and pearl earrings from Kreuger Jewellery.

Princess Sofia and Princess Madeleine both wore fairly understated earrings. Sofia’s feature gemstone drops, possibly diamonds; Madeleine’s are glittering stud earrings.

We also got a glimpse of Sofia’s rings, including her diamond engagement ring, and her watch.

The two biggest shining stars of the Bernadotte family, however, wore no jewelry at all. Little Princess Estelle stole the show, as per usual…

…and her new baby brother, Prince Oscar, made his first significant appearance in public. We’ll see him again in about a month at his baptism.

Lots of foreign royals, including many of the king’s extended family members, also joined in the celebrations. King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway’s appearance had to be canceled following a helicopter tragedy in their country, but Princess Martha Louise represented the family. She wore a glamorous pair of statement earrings.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who is the king’s first cousin, wore a pair of sparkling earrings at the Te Deum service.

Her sister, Princess Benedikte, wore her multi-colored pearl necklace with diamond and pearl earrings.

Crown Princess Mary was also at the birthday celebrations; she wore a brooch from her collection that appears to be studded with amethysts. She donned the same brooch during King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima’s visit to Denmark last March.

Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands wore pearls in various shades of silver. You can also see her bejeweled hat pin in this photo.

Queen Sofia of Spain wore pearls with an heirloom diamond and ruby pendant, a piece she inherited from her mother, Queen Friederike of Greece.

We got a very limited look at the jewelry worn by Margarita of Bulgaria, the wife of former King Simeon, but it looks to be silver-toned.

Princess Takamado wore an ensemble that makes me feel like she’s the Princess Anne of the Japanese imperial family. She paired it with a brooch and a pair of whimsical earrings that (I think) have floral studs.

We also got a look at her gorgeous rings. One features a diamond, while the other is set with diamonds surrounding a single pearl.

Royal jewelry isn’t only limited to women, of course. One photo gave us a look at a bracelet and gem-set ring worn by the king’s cousin, Leopold of Bavaria.

The final event of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden’s 60th birthday celebrations was the most glittering: a gala dinner at the palace.

Queen Silvia wore the grandest diadem in Sweden’s vast collection, the Braganza Tiara, with coordinating diamond floral jewels and the diamond necklace with a pear-shaped pendant.

Crown Princess Victoria made an early appearance in the Baden Fringe Tiara, which has become one of her signature pieces; you can tell that she wasn’t yet the primary wearer of the piece because the base is still wrapped in gray velvet to match Princess Lilian’s hair. Victoria also wore coordinating diamond pieces: her small earrings, a simple riviere, and a small round floral brooch.

Princess Madeleine wore her mother’s diamond fringe — later Madeleine’s own wedding tiara — with a seed-pearl choker, diamond and pearl earrings, and a round diamond brooch.

Princess Lilian wore two favorite pieces, one from her own jewelry box and one from the Bernadotte collection. The tiara, the Boucheron Laurel Wreath, is the convertible tiara/necklace that once belonged to her mother-in-law, Margaret of Connaught. The diamond necklace was converted from a stomacher that belonged to Queen Josefina. In 2013, to pay tribute to Lilian, Crown Princess Victoria wore both the tiara and the necklace at Princess Madeleine’s wedding. On this occasion, Lilian also wore diamond and pearl earrings and a diamond and pearl brooch.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore her wedding tiara with Crown Princess Martha’s silver wedding earrings, plus (I believe) the brooch from the amethyst parure.

Crown Princess Mary also wore her wedding tiara, pairing it with the earrings and pearl choker from her collection of aquamarine jewels.

Princess (now Queen) Maxima wore pieces from the Mellerio Ruby Parure, including the suite’s gorgeous diamond and ruby tiara.

Princess (now Queen) Mathilde wore her diamond laurel wreath tiara with a diamond floral necklace, diamond and pearl earrings, and a gem-set bracelet.

Both Mathilde’s and Maxima’s mothers-in-law also attended the gala, as did Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg. She wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara, plus the convertible sapphire tiara/necklace. Beatrix wore Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara, which all but disappeared into her hair, with the family’s Russian bow brooch. Paola wore another convertible tiara, the Diamond Art Deco Bandeau.

The Jordanian royals were also at the gala. Princess Sarvath wore a lovely diamond tiara and brooch — and check out the rock on her left hand!

Princess Rym wore an intriguing tiara with a pair of earrings that look like they might be part of a coordinating set.

And one more tiara: Marie-Chantal of Greece donned the same JAR earrings and diamond bracelet from the night before, but for the gala she added her daughter’s diamond fringe tiara and a small diamond brooch.

To continue our look back at the jewels worn during the 60th birthday celebrations for King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, we’re flashing back to the daytime events from the king’s birthday, including a balcony appearance and a luncheon at city hall.

Queen Silvia wore diamond stud earrings with a lovely, petite diamond and pearl brooch.

And Princess Lilian joined in with the pearl parade as well. Above, you can also see a fairly clear view of Princess Madeleine’s necklace, which has a pale blue pendant stone — possibly an aquamarine?

I can’t be certain, but Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s earrings from the luncheon greatly resemble the style of earring she wore the night before, only shorter. Perhaps these are just the top portion of the other earrings?

Princess Astrid wore a pearl necklace, earrings set with diamonds and a darker gemstone (sapphires?), and the most adorable little diamond bee brooch.

Princess (now Queen) Maxima wore diamond pendant earrings with orange drops.

And Marie-Chantal of Greece wore earrings and a long coordinating necklace. The set looks like high-end costume jewelry to me, possibly Chanel or Dior? (She wore the same necklace and earrings at the christening of Prince Christian of Denmark in 2006 and at Queen Margrethe’s ruby jubilee in 2012, and she’s worn the earrings by themselves at numerous events.) You can also see a glimpse of another silver-toned pendant necklace under her suit jacket.
