Royal Ascot Jewels 2019: Day One

The most wonderful royal time of the year is officially here, everybody! Here’s a look at the jewels worn for the first day of Royal Ascot!

The Queen was joined by the Duke of York and two special guests in her carriage: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, who stayed on after yesterday’s Garter Day ceremonies. (More on that event here!)

For the first day of the races, the Queen wore light blue with one of her newer brooches, the Sapphire Jubilee Snowflake Brooch.

As the name suggests, the brooch was a gift from the people of Canada to mark her Sapphire Jubilee in 2017. The brooch’s design is loosely inspired by a snowflake — you’ll note that it only has four sides, while snowflakes always have six. Interestingly, the ITV commentators from today’s appearance took a different approach to the piece, noting a resemblance to the North Star. (More on the brooch here!)

Queen Maxima, delightfully, wore a fantastically bonkers hat and some major diamonds for the races today.

Her earrings are made up of removable diamond clusters from the top of the Stuart Tiara, which she famously debuted in its full form in Britain last autumn. (Here’s a look at a previous appearance from the earrings!)

She also wore the Dutch royal family’s gorgeous Diamond Trellis Bracelet, which was made during the reign of Queen Wilhelmina.

The Duchess of Cornwall wore her daytime jewelry uniform: her favorite pearl drop earrings with her pearl choker necklace featuring a large diamond clasp.

Beside her in the second carriage was the Duchess of Cambridge, who was gorgeous in light blue for the races. She accessorized her Elie Saab dress with blue topaz and diamond earrings from Kiki McDonough.

The Princess Royal wore pearls with a classic piece from her jewelry box: her diamond and gold ribbon brooch. (More on the brooch here!)

Zara Phillips wore sparkling earrings with disc-shaped drops for the first day of the meet.

The York princesses, however, kept their jewelry predictably minimal, with the usual assortment of hoop earrings and bracelets. (What earrings would you have paired with Beatrice’s ensemble?)

The whirlwind of hats, jewels, and horses at Royal Ascot has come to a close for another year. Here’s a look at the royal jewels we saw on the final day of the races.

The Queen gave us a bit of a jewelry surprise today, choosing the Diamond Maple Leaf Brooch. It’s unusual to see HM wear this brooch at an event not related to Canada, but hey, Canada Day is a week from tomorrow, right? (You can learn all about the brooch’s history here.)

Another Canadian featured at the races on Saturday was the Queen’s granddaughter-in-law, Autumn Phillips.

She wore golden jewelry to watch the races — and to present the trophy to the winner of the Windsor Castle Stakes with her husband, Peter Phillips.

The Queen’s niece, Lady Sarah Chatto, was also at Ascot on Saturday, wearing her diamond starburst earrings.

Royal Ascot Jewels 2018 (Day 4)

The races at Royal Ascot are nearing their end for the year, and that typically means that royal attendance also declines. That’s certainly the case today — but we did get our annual appearance from a rather interesting former member of the family!

The Queen, as usual, was indeed on hand for the fourth day of the races, wearing a vibrant green outfit with touches of pink.

She accessorized with another brooch from the Queen Mother’s collection: the Courtauld Thomson Scallop-Shell Brooch. The brooch, which was made in 1919, was bequeathed to the Queen Mum in 1944 by Winifred Hope Thomson, a writer and artist. The diamond and pearl brooch has become one of the most-worn pieces out of the large cache that the Queen inherited from her mother in 2002.

The Queen’s granddaughter, Princess Beatrice of York, accompanied her father, the Duke of York, to the races — but sadly, as per usual, left her jewelry at home.

But she did bring someone else along with her: Fergie! Sarah, Duchess of York usually attends one day each year at Ascot. Today she accessorized her navy blue outfit with diamond and pearl drop earrings and numerous bracelets, including one featuring her daughters’ names.

We also had a sighting of another princess: Princess Haya of Jordan, wife of the Sheikh of Dubai. We caught a glimpse of her drop earrings as she and her daughter, Sheikha Al Jalila, accepted the trophy after their horse won the King Edward VII Stakes.

Haya has also attended other days of this year’s Royal Ascot meet. I particularly enjoyed the classic jewels she wore on Tuesday’s first day of the races.
