Could it be anyone else? Our top tiara moment from Crown Princess Victoria’s 2010 wedding is… the bride in the Cameo Tiara!

Today is the tenth anniversary of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel’s royal wedding. They married on June 19, 2010, at Storkyrkan Cathedral in Stockholm. The couple had been dating for almost a decade, and had been engaged since February 2009. 

On her wedding day, Crown Princess Victoria wore a gown designed by Pär Engsheden and a suite of heirloom royal jewelry.

She chose pieces from the family’s Cameo Parure for the occasion, including the suite’s grand tiara.

The tiara was made by Nitot in 1809 and given by Napoleon I to Empress Josephine. Appropriately for a wedding, the central cameo in the tiara features Venus and Cupid, both gods of love. In the recent Swedish royal jewelry documentary, the royals revealed that the diadem is quite fragile, and Crown Princess Victoria said that she has “a little extra respect” for the cameos and their lengthy royal history. So far, this is the only time she has worn the tiara.

Victoria also wore the earrings from the suite…

…and the bracelet from the parure. Victoria has worn both of these pieces in more recent years, as have Princess Madeleine and Queen Silvia.

The Cameo Tiara has become something of an unofficial bridal diadem for the Bernadottes over the past half century. In 1961, it was worn by Princess Birgitta, Victoria’s aunt, for her civil wedding ceremony in Stockholm.

Three years later, in 1964, it was also worn by Princess Desiree (another aunt) at her wedding at Stockholm’s cathedral.

And in 1976, Victoria’s mother, Queen Silvia, famously wore the Cameo Tiara to marry King Carl XVI Gustaf. She recently revealed that she wore the tiara at his suggestion.

Like her mother, Victoria wore Queen Sofia’s heirloom Brussels lace veil on her wedding day. The veil originally belonged to Queen Sofia of Sweden, who wore it on her own wedding day in 1858. It has subsequently been worn by many Swedish royal brides, including Princess Sibylla, Princess Margaretha, Princess Desiree, and Princess Christina, as well as Queen Silvia. Tucked inside the veil at the back of Victoria’s tiara is a small sprig of myrtle, taken from a plant brought to Sweden by Crown Princess Margareta in 1905.

Victoria and Daniel’s bridal party also reflected royal continuity. Along with several members of both of their families, their attendants included three of Victoria’s royal godchildren: Princess Catharina-Amalia (the future Queen of the Netherlands), Princess Ingrid Alexandra (the future Queen of Norway), and Prince Christian (the future King of Denmark).

The runner-up spot for the best tiara moment at Crown Princess Victoria’s royal wedding goes to … the mother of the bride, Queen Silvia!

Queen Silvia reached for some of the grandest and most important royal jewels in the Bernadotte vaults for the wedding of the nation’s future monarch — who also happens to be her elder daughter.

She paired the grand Braganza Tiara with jewels from the Russian Pink Topaz Suite.

The occasion gave us some excellent views of these historic jewels. Here’s a closer look at the Braganza Tiara, which came to Sweden through an inheritance from a former Empress of Brazil.

And here’s a great view of the necklace from the pink topaz suite, which was a gift from Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia (wife of Tsar Paul I) to her daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, in honor of the birth of Maria Pavlovna’s daughter, Augusta. (The provenance was confirmed in the recent Swedish royal jewelry documentary.) Fittingly, the topazes in the suite also come from Brazil. Remember that Silvia’s mother, Alice Soares de Toledo, was Brazilian, too!

Silvia also wore a jeweled bracelet on her right wrist.

June 19, 2010 also happened to be King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s own wedding anniversary. Today, they’re celebrating 44 years of marriage. You can look back at their own royal wedding in our Jewels in Motion post on the day!

The king honored his wife and their 34th wedding anniversary during the wedding speeches, which were some of the loveliest in recent memory.

The third spot on our countdown of the best tiara moments from Crown Princess Victoria’s royal wedding goes to: the heirloom jewels worn by her sister, Princess Madeleine!

At this wedding, Madeleine made her debut in one of the family’s most important sentimental jewels: the Connaught Diamond Tiara, which they call “Princess Sibylla’s Tiara” because it was such a favorite of Madeleine’s late grandmother. Madeleine had previously worn one of the necklace settings of the piece (featuring just the drops on a delicate chain), but this was her first outing in the tiara.

The choice to wear the Connaught tiara was apparently a very last-minute decision. On the wedding day, the Swedish court put out a press release describing all of the jewelry worn by members of the royal family. In the English version of the document, the tiara is not included in the description of Madeleine’s jewelry, suggesting that she may have planned to wear something totally different.

Indeed, in this close-up of the tiara from the wedding, you’ll note that the base of the piece is still wrapped in dark brown velvet, to match the hair of the piece’s usual wearer. At this point in time, that was Madeleine’s mother, Queen Silvia.

The press release did get one part of the jewelry ensemble correct: the necklace. This is the piece commonly referred to as Intågssmycket, or the Processional Jewels. The diamond, pearl, and Ceylon sapphire necklace was a gift to Queen Victoria of Sweden on her arrival in Stockholm in 1881.

Madeleine also reached for one of the family’s small diamond bow brooches to secure the sash of the Order of the Seraphim.

On her left wrist, Madeleine wore her sapphire tennis bracelet…

…and on her right wrist, she stacked diamonds and her Cartier Love Bracelet.
