Royal Jewel Rewind: Luxembourg Royal Wedding (Part 1)

Five years ago tomorrow, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg married his Belgian fiancee, Countess Stephanie de Lannoy, at the Cathedral of our Lady of Luxembourg. Royals from around the world attended the ceremony, and today, we’ve got a two-part flashback to all of the sparkle. Enjoy, and stop back here later today for part two!

Stephanie wore jewels from her own family and her new husband’s family on her wedding day. Her bridal tiara is the Lannoy family’s diamond tiara, a delicate sparkler with a large pear-shaped diamond at its center. (Learn more about the tiara’s history, and see close-ups, over here!)

Her diamond earrings are the same ones she wore for her pre-wedding gala the night before. They were reportedly a wedding gift to Grand Duchess Maria Teresa from her parents in 1981, and they’ve now been worn by three Luxembourgish royal brides: Maria Teresa, Stephanie, and Claire.

Stephanie did suffer a slight tiara malfunction on the day. The Lannoy Tiara, which was secured to her hair at each end. Because the base wasn’t anchored in the middle, the tiara was able to flip backward. Thankfully, putting it back into position wasn’t a difficult task.

As she did at the gala the night before, Stephanie also wore a necklace hidden under the neckline of her gown. The thin chain almost certainly supports Stephanie’s Miraculous Medal pendant. (You can read more about this religious medal over here.) Stephanie is rarely seen without the necklace.

Here’s a close-up view of the simple gold wedding bands that the couple exchanged, engraved with their names and their wedding date. As she did the night before, Stephanie also wore two diamond rings: her own engagement ring and the engagement ring that belonged to her late mother.

Stephanie’s new mother-in-law, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, wore a brightly-colored ensemble by Natan for the wedding. The sparkling flower on her jacket is a part of the outfit, not a separate jewel.

She did wear sparkling earrings for the wedding; the central stone here looks a bit like a brown diamond.

Guillaume’s sister, Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg, served as one of the bridesmaids for her new sister-in-law. She kept her jewelry extremely minimal, wearing only a pair of pearl earrings.

And Countess Diane de Nassau wore a vibrant set of jewels set with multicolored gemstones, including a heart pendant — appropriate for a wedding!

Archduchess Marie-Astrid of Austria, who was born a princess of Luxembourg, wore elegant jewels, including a pearl choker with a gem-set clasp. Her earrings featured both pearl studs and pearl drops, and her insect brooch was also set with a pearl.

Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein, also born a princess of Luxembourg, chose diamonds and sapphires for the wedding, including a lovely pair of earrings and a whimsical brooch.

Margaretha’s sister-in-law, Princess Marie Aglae of Liechtenstein, wore a fantastic four-stranded pearl choker with a diamond floral embellishment, plus classic diamond and pearl earrings.

Queen Paola of Belgium, who is the groom’s great-aunt, glittered in diamonds and pearls. Her floral brooch featured a bright red central portion. You can also just spot a second brooch pinned to her hat.

Queen Mathilde, who was then the Duchess of Brabant, really does excel at daytime glitter. For this wedding, she wore the white and yellow diamond earrings given to her by her husband, plus the beautiful diamond waterfall brooch given to her by Queen Fabiola.

Diamond earrings with luminous pearl drops were Princess Astrid of Belgium’s main accessory — but don’t miss that enormous diamond ring on her finger!

Simple pearl stud earrings were Princess Claire’s jewel selection for the day. The sequined flower on her lapel is part of the jacket — I suspect Natan here, too.

The always-elegant Queen Fabiola wore pearls for her great-nephew’s wedding, plus a very interesting headpiece!

From the Netherlands, Queen (now Princess) Beatrix piled on the diamonds, including diamond earrings, a diamond riviere, and a diamond circle brooch.

And the ever inventive Queen (then Princess) Maxima wore pieces from Queen Wilhelmina’s fascinating Borneo Suite. The gold and diamond jewels were Wilhelmina’s coronation gift from the Sultan of Kutai in 1898. Note the earrings here, plus the brooch on Maxima’s belt.

Here it is: our final flashback post on the glittering pre-wedding gala held for Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy! Margarita of Romania, daughter of the country’s last king, is also a family member of the groom. Margarita’s maternal grandfather, Prince Rene of Bourbon-Parma, was a brother of Grand Duke Henri’s paternal grandfather, Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma. Margarita wore the only grand family tiara that has remained with her family: the diamond meander that once belonged to Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna of Russia. (More on that over here!) She paired it with dramatic pearl drop earrings and a fleur-de-lis brooch — which, appropriately, is a symbol of the House of Bourbon.

Crafty Miriam of Bulgaria, daughter-in-law of the country’s last tsar, cobbled together a tiara for this gala using existing pieces of jewelry, including a bracelet, a brooch, and two pairs of earrings. You can see an image of the separate pieces over here!

The former royal family of Greece was well represented at the gala. Queen Anne-Marie wore the Khedive of Egypt Tiara, the traditional wedding tiara of Danish princesses. (More on that over here!) She paired it with more jewels from her own family, including a diamond necklace that belonged to her paternal grandmother, Queen Alexandrine of Denmark, and a heart-shaped aquamarine pendant that belonged to her maternal grandmother, Margaret of Connaught. She also pinned her large geometric aquamarine and diamond brooch to the waist of her gown.

With small diamond earrings, Marie-Chantal of Greece wore the Miller Diamond Fringe Tiara. (More on that one over here!)

Katherine of Serbia, the wife of Crown Prince Alexander, wore her go-to suite of jewels: a small tiara with sparkling earrings and a chain-style necklace. She’s worn this set at several gala occasions, including the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in 2010.

It was tough to spot her among the guests, but the Duchess of Braganza, wife of the pretender to the Portuguese throne, was also at the gala. She wore her small diamond bandeau. (More on that over here!)

Representing one branch of the former royal family of Italy, Clotilde Courau (a famous French actress who is also the wife of Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy) wore a sparkling headband in lieu of a tiara.

Queen Sonja of Norway wore diamonds and pearls for the gala: the new version of Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara (more here!) plus pearl earrings, a pearl necklace, a pearl bracelet, and a pearl ring. She also wore a stack of gold bangles.

As she so often does, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway went minimal with her jewelry; she wore only her diamond daisy wedding tiara (more here!) and a diamond bracelet. Her vintage hairstyle obscured her earrings.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark managed to evade the cour’s official camera person, but we did get a few glimpses of her diamond jewels. She wore her Diamond Floral Aigrette; you can see the long edges of the tiara wrapping around her head in the image on the right. (More on the tiara’s history here!)

Queen Silvia of Sweden was especially glittery in Queen Sofia’s Tiara (more here!) and the family’s grand pink topaz demi-parure (more here!).

She also avoided the cameras like an expert, but we caught a few glimpses of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden wearing the small Cut-Steel Bandeau. (See a closer view here!) She also wore a gorgeous family diamond necklace.

This (slightly fuzzy) image shows that Victoria even wore the matching steel comb in the back of her hair!

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom lent several pieces of jewelry to the Countess of Wessex for the gala. Sophie wore the family’s smaller aquamarine tiara (more here!), plus the diamond and pearl earrings now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge (more here!). She finished off the look with the fantastic King Faisal Necklace.

Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco was decked out in diamonds, including statement earrings and a massive necklace. And that ring!

Representing Jordan, Princess Sarvath chose a bandeau-style tiara, pairing it with diamond earrings and a small diamond brooch to secure her sash.

Also in attendance — and wearing a diamond tiara — from Jordan: Princess Zeina, Princess Sarvath’s daughter-in-law. She’s the wife of Prince Rashid, and, delightfully, she’s also a world-class table tennis player.
