This was one of Infanta Cristina’s last major tiara appearances, thanks to the scandal surrounding her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, and his corruption conviction.

It was also Cristina’s first and only public appearance in a major royal tiara: the diamond and pearl tiara that belonged to her great-grandmother, Queen Ena of Spain.

These days, it’s rare to see this particular tiara worn by a woman who is not a reigning queen, so this outing on Cristina was especially unusual. The tiara was made by Cartier in the 1920s; it was a renovation of one of Queen Ena’s wedding gifts. It was also originally able to be worn with Ena’s emeralds, which were later sold.
