The Bernadotte Emeralds

The Swedish vaults are packed with colorful gemstones, including complete parures set with sapphires, amethysts, and aquamarines. The family also once owned an enormous parure of emerald jewels, but that left the family ages ago and now belongs to the Norwegian royals. Although the Swedish royals lost their major emerald parure, the collection does still include a number of emerald pieces, including a historic suite: the Bernadotte Emeralds.

The three-piece demi-parure of emerald and diamond jewelry once belonged to the first Bernadotte king, Carl XIV Johan. It consists of a large necklace that was originally worn as a belt, plus two brooches. The larger brooch was originally a belt buckle. Above, Princess Sibylla wears the necklace and the larger brooch with the Connaught Diamond Tiara at the state opening of parliament in 1957.

In the GIF above, you can see that Sibylla also wore the necklace at the 1961 state opening, pairing it again with the Connaught Tiara and the Vasa Earrings.

Crown Princess Victoria has also worn the Bernadotte emeralds on several occasions. In 2012, she paired the necklace and the smaller brooch with the Diamond Four-Button Tiara at the Nobel Prize banquet.

Victoria actually wore the complete demi-parure on that occasion; above, you can see that she placed the larger brooch from the set in her hair.

As we approach the Nobel Prize festivities this coming weekend, it’s time to step back in our bejeweled time machine and marvel at the jewels worn by the Swedish royals to the Nobels a decade ago!

Queen Silvia chose diamonds, diamonds, and more diamonds. She wore Queen Sofia’s Tiara — better known as the Nine-Prong Tiara for obvious reasons — with the family’s large diamond cross and their large pear-shaped diamond drop earrings. She used a huge diamond brooch from the family collection to secure her order sash.

Also in diamonds: Crown Princess Victoria, who wore the Diamond Six-Button Tiara. She paired it with a diamond riviere with a diamond leaf pendant set with a single central pearl. Other accessories included the small diamond earrings from Queen Josefina’s diamond stomacher and a large diamond brooch.

Princess Madeleine kept her look sleek and simple for the ceremony and banquet. She wore the diamond fringe tiara that now belongs to her, plus dramatic pearl drop earrings from the family vaults.
