Sparkling Swedish Jewels (And a Tiara Surprise!)

The Bernadottes were out in force on Thursday for two glittering events — and one of them brought us a majorly surprising tiara moment.

Crown Princess Victoria was in Leipzig for the Swedish Business Prize 2017 Ceremony. She wore a pair of earrings set with blue gemstones and a necklace with a small, glittering pendant stone. The earrings are the same ones she wore to celebrate her fortieth birthday earlier this year.

She also wore a stack of silver bracelets on her left wrist.

Back in Sweden, King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Sofia attended a gala dinner. Queen Silvia wore jewels from the family’s amethyst parure.

But it was Princess Sofia who gave us a surprise: she debuted a second setting of the Emerald Palmette Tiara that she wore on her wedding day. This new setting is an all-diamond version of the tiara. The piece was also situated differently on her head, worn in a new, more open way. (Read more about the tiara’s creation over here.)

Because of the holiday here in America, we’re delaying our weekly jewel roundup until next Friday, when we’ll have a supersized version. Instead, it’s time for an overview of some of the big events coming up on the royal calendar. Here are some of the royal occasions you can look forward to over the next few weeks…

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is currently on a state visit to Ghana, which wraps up tomorrow. The busy schedule of events includes a state banquet in Accra and a visit to Osu Castle, which was known as Fort Christiansborg when it was the capital of the Danish Gold Coast.

From November 27-29, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg will make a state visit to Japan. Because of her serious fear of flying, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa will not make the trip. Instead, Henri and Maria Teresa’s daughter, Princess Alexandra, will accompany her father. The trip will be Alexandra’s highest-profile undertaking yet as a part of the grand ducal family.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands will head for the Dutch Caribbean at the end of this month. They will visit Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Sint Maarten. The visit coincides with Saba Day, the island’s national day of celebration. Willem-Alexander and Maxima will also visit parts of Sint Maarten that were devastated by Hurricane Irma; it will be Willem-Alexander’s second visit to that island since the hurricane hit in September.

The Swedish royal family will gather on December 1 to celebrate the christening of Prince Gabriel of Sweden, the second son of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. Gabriel Carl Walter, who was born on August 31, will be christened at the Royal Chapel at Drottningholm Palace. The celebration will take place at noon local time (which is 6 AM eastern time in the States); it will be broadcast on television and online by SVT, which you can access here. Gabriel’s godparents should be announced shortly before the christening next week.

The annual Nobel Prize festivities will take place in Norway and Sweden on December 10. The Peace Prize will be awarded in Oslo, and all other prizes will be handed out at the annual ceremony in Stockholm. So far, the royal court has confirmed that King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia, Princess Madeleine, and Chris O’Neill will all be in attendance for the ceremony and the banquet. All eight are also scheduled to attend the King’s Dinner the following evening.

Although any celebrations will almost certainly be private, it’s worth noting that another big wedding anniversary will happen soon in Britain. The Princess Royal and Sir Timothy Laurence will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary on December 12. The pair married twenty-five years ago at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
