Details of Tomorrow’s Swedish Royal Christening

On Friday morning in Stockholm, the Swedish royals will gather at the Royal Palace for the christening of Prince Oscar, the son of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel. Here are some of the details we learned today ahead of the event…

Oscar will have three royal godparents: Princess Madeleine of Sweden (his aunt), Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. A fourth godparent, Oscar Magnuson, is the son of Oscar’s great-aunt, Princess Christina.

So far, it’s been confirmed that (along with Oscar’s parents and sister) almost every member of the Swedish royal family will attend: King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia, Princess Madeleine, Chris O’Neill, Princess Leonore, and Prince Nicolas. (Baby Alexander will understandably be staying home.) Several members of the extended family will be there too, including Princess Margaretha, Princess Christina, Tord Magnuson, Countess Marianne Bernadotte, and Count Bertil and Countess Jill Bernadotte. Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark will also be attending, as will Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway.

Guests will begin arriving at the palace chapel at 11 AM Stockholm time, which translates to 5 AM in New York and 2 AM in Los Angeles. The christening will begin an hour later. The christening will be broadcast by SVT; the broadcast will begin at 11:30 AM Stockholm time. You should be able to view the event worldwide through SVT’s website. Here’s the link!

10. In California on Wednesday, Princess Charlene of Monaco wore a pair of sunburst-shaped stud earrings and a diamond cross to launch the American branch of her charitable foundation.

6. At Tuesday’s Buckingham Palace garden party, the Duchess of Gloucester wore a gorgeous suite of jewels (and carried an elaborate umbrella!). You can see closeups here, as well as glimpses of jewels worn by Princess Alexandra and the Countess of Wessex.

5. The Duchess of Cornwall hosted a special garden party at Buckingham Palace on Thursday to mark the 150th anniversary of Barnardo’s, a children’s charity. For the event, she wore her grand pearl choker necklace with a diamond and pink topaz clasp.

4. At Tuesday’s garden party, Queen Elizabeth II wore one of her 21st birthday gifts, the diamond Flame Lily Brooch.

3. The Queen held a reception for members of parliament at Buck House on Monday; she wore the Albert Brooch and a healthy amount of skepticism.
2. Two state visits this week = two tiaras! In Sweden, Queen Silvia wore the glittering Queen Sofia’s Tiara, which is also sometimes called the Nine-Prong Tiara (for obvious reasons).

1. My top vote of the week goes to one of my personal favorite tiaras: the Luxembourg Vine Leaves Tiara, worn by Grand Duchess Maria Teresa during the state visit to Finland.

State Visit Jewels: Luxembourg and Sweden

Two state visits are currently happening in Europe: the Swedish royals welcomed the Chilean president to Stockholm, while Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg are visiting Finland. Here’s a look at some of the jewels we’ve seen during the diplomatic events.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore statement earrings and a green brooch for the welcome ceremonies in Helsinki on Tuesday.

In Sweden, Queen Silvia wore pearls and Crown Princess Victoria wore a large floral brooch to welcome President Bachelet. Princess Sofia also attended the welcome ceremony, though we didn’t get a good look at her jewels.

The real glitter, though, came out during the state banquets on Tuesday evening. Maria Teresa wore one of my favorite tiaras from the Nassau vaults: the Diamond Vine Leaves Tiara.

New mothers Victoria and Sofia skipped the banquet in Sweden, but Queen Silvia brought out plenty of sparkle on her own. Her gala jewels included Queen Sofia’s Tiara — aka the “Nine-Prong.”
