Charles and Camilla’s Northern Ireland Visit: Day 1

While lots of royals were in Norway toasting King Harald and Queen Sonja yesterday, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall headed to Northern Ireland for the first day of a two-day visit.

For the daytime engagements, which included a visit to the new Seamus Heaney center in Bellaghy, Camilla wore her diamond and pearl drop earrings with her paired dragonfly brooches. One is set with diamonds, the other with sapphires.

Charles and Camilla attended a performance during their visit to the center; in a moment you couldn’t make up if you tried, a crown apparently fell off one of the actors’ heads and rolled to rest at their feet. (I love their expressions here.)

Last night, the couple traveled to Hillsborough Castle for a “Music and Words for a Spring Evening” performance.

Camilla wore her turquoise and diamond earrings, plus one of her signature pearl choker necklaces. For this event, she chose the four-stranded necklace with the round diamond clasp.

One more British guest was in attendance: Lady Elizabeth Shakerley. Her parents were Viscount Anson and Anne Bowes-Lyon, a niece of the Queen Mother. Elizabeth’s mother became Princess Anne of Denmark when she married her second husband, Prince George of Denmark. George was a first cousin of King Harald V of Norway.

The diamond tiara that Elizabeth wears here belonged to her mother. Elizabeth wore it on her wedding day, and she’s also worn it at subsequent royal events.

Here’s another of King Harald’s maternal cousins: Madeleine Kogevinas, the daughter of Harald’s uncle, Count Carl Bernadotte. She was born Countess Madeleine Bernadotte. She’s worn this diamond and pearl floral tiara at previous royal events, including the wedding of Crown princess Victoria of Sweden; here she wears it with a long diamond pendant necklace.

And one more tiara-wearer: Desiree Kogevinas, Madeleine’s daughter. She wore a dramatic golden bandeau low across her forehead, making her look like a combination of a Greek goddess and a comic book superhero!

Tiaras from Norway’s Birthday Dinner (Part 1)

King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway both turn 80 this year, so they decided to combine their celebrations into one super-sized bash this weekend in Oslo. Tonight, things got very sparkly at a white-tie birthday dinner. Here’s the first of two posts focusing on the glittering tiaras worn this evening!

Queen Sonja wore pieces from the grandest parure in the Norwegian vaults: the family’s emerald set. Unfortunately, the green in these jewels isn’t super pleasant with the bright red sash of the Order of St. Olav or the red ribbon of King Harald’s family order.

But the emeralds themselves are exquisite. Sonja wore the tiara, earrings, necklace, and brooch from the parure.

Unfortunately, the acid-green hue of Sonja’s dress didn’t work with either the emeralds or the order sash, in my opinion.

The emeralds were a slam-dunk guess for tonight’s dinner, but we got a big tiara surprise from Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. She wore Queen Maud’s Vifte Tiara as a diadem for the first time, pairing it with her interchangeable drop earrings, this time hung with pearls.

Mette-Marit has worn the Vifte Tiara in public only once before: at her pre-wedding gala, when she wore it as a necklace. This time, she placed the teeny tiara in the back of her hair, creating a halo-like effect from the front.

Mette-Marit wore both the sash of the Order of St. Olav and King Harald’s family order with her gown. She was escorted into the dinner by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

Princess Martha Louise of Norway wore a mish-mash of jewels from her personal collection. Her tiara, King Olav’s Gift Tiara, was an 18th birthday gift from her grandfather. She paired it with dramatic dimaond hoop earrings, a diamond brooch, and the lovely necklace she wore at the wedding of Princess Madeleine of Sweden. The recently-separated princess also wore a major cluster ring on her left hand.

Martha Louise, who was escorted by King Philippe of Belgium (her second cousin), wore the sash of the Order of St. Olav and her father’s family order.

King Harald’s sister, Princess Astrid, wore her grandest suite of jewelry: the diamond and turquoise parure that once belonged to Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom. She secured her order sash with a diamond and pearl bow brooch.
