#2: Mary’s Edwardian Tiara

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark gave us one of the best gifts of all in 2016: a new tiara! Technically, this is a piece we’d seen before — she wore it as a necklace in public for the first time in 2015.

But she didn’t wear the convertible piece on a tiara frame until March of this year. She selected the diamond, ruby, and spinel tiara for a banquet at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. The tiara is an antique, made during the Edwardian period — hence the name I use for the tiara. (You can read all about the piece, including possibilities about its acquisition, over here!)

Mary wore the tiara for a second time during a state visit from Mexico, and she was photographed in it again for Vogue this summer. I just love a tiara debut!

#3: Victoria’s Nobel Splendor

The annual Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm is always one of the most exciting events of the year for royal jewel lovers, and this year, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden gave us a tour-de-force jewel performance.

Victoria wore an unusual diadem, the large Napoleonic Cut-Steel Tiara, which manages to sparkle mightily without a single diamond.

The real virtuoso decision, though, was the pairing of the steel tiara with other jewels from the same era: pieces from the Cameo Parure. Add in a glorious gown with metallic embroidery, and you’ve got a truly remarkable jewelry moment! (See even more photos from the event over here!)

#4: Silvia’s German Jewels

For a dinner at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin this October, Queen Silvia of Sweden wore two major pieces of royal jewelry with German roots. (Here’s our post on the event.)

On her head, she perched the Baden Fringe Tiara. In recent years, the tiara has been worn almost exclusively by Crown Princess Victoria. But this was a very good choice for a dinner in Germany, as the tiara originally belonged to Queen Victoria of Sweden, who was born Princess Victoria of Baden.

But the best part of this bejeweled appearance wasn’t even the tiara; it was the brooch! This is another piece of jewelry from Victoria of Baden’s collection, and this was the first time we saw Silvia wear it in public. How unimaginably vast is the Bernadotte collection, when the women of the family can regularly pop on jewels that haven’t been seen in decades or even centuries?
