It’s time for one of the most delightful, old-fashioned royal days of the year: Garter Day! The Knights and Ladies of the Order of the Garter gathered today for their annual service at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, and we had a few pieces of lovely royal jewelry on show.

With her Garter robes, the Queen wore Queen Mary’s Floret Earrings, which she inherited from her grandmother in 1953.

The diamond and platinum earrings were made by Garrard in 1939. The central brilliants had been in Mary’s collection much longer: they were given to her as a wedding present by Sir William Mackinnon in 1893, and you’ll often see them referred to as the “Mackinnon diamonds” as a result.

The Queen last wore these earrings on Garter Day in 2006. (See our post on the Queen’s Garter Day earrings over here!)

The Princess Royal wore classic diamond and pearl earrings with her Garter robes for the occasion. I also spot pearls peeking out from her collar.

During the procession, Princess Anne’s robes were swept aside for a moment, revealing the gown she wore underneath. It’s a good reminder that, although this service is a daytime event, the Garter ladies essentially don evening wear with their robes — which explains why their jewels are often more substantial than their usual daytime accessories.

Princess Alexandra, who walked in the procession alongside her elder brother, the Duke of Kent, wore diamond and pearl drop earrings. You can also spot one of her favorite necklaces, the pearl choker with the geometric clasp, peeking out from her Garter robes.

The Duchess of Cornwall wore diamonds and pearls (her usual pearl drop earrings and the four-stranded pearl necklace with the round diamond clasp) to coordinate with her black and white ensemble for the event.

The Countess of Wessex wore a lovely pair of earrings with dark pave-set drops.

She also wore a diamond necklace with an elaborate round pendant. Behind her, you can spot the Duchess of Gloucester, who wore pearls.
