The Dutch royal family celebrated King’s Day with a unique slate of virtual activities in Eindhoven and The Hague on April 27. Here’s a look at the royal jewels we saw during the festivities, including a very exciting jewelry moment from a future monarch!
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands were on hand for the annual celebration, along with their three daughters, the Princess of Orange, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane. This year, most of the celebrations were virtual, streamed online from the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven.
Queen Maxima embraced colorful jewels and clothing for the digital presentation. With an outfit in shades of green and gold, she accessorized with pieces from her collection of orange-hued jewels. She wore a pair of festive earrings featuring several stones, including a pearl and a yellow gemstone carved to resemble a pineapple, as well as her citrine bracelet and a ring set with a large citrine or topaz.
On her left wrist, she wore a watch and her gold and cabochon gemstone bracelet, which is engraved with the names of her husband and their daughters. Her wedding ring and engagement ring, which features an unusual orange diamond, were also placed on her left hand.
I’ll admit that I gasped in delight when I saw the jewelry chosen by Princess Amalia for this year’s festivities. The seventeen-year-old heir to the Dutch throne has shown promise as a future jewelry wearer, but this event was one of her first big forays into the family’s heirloom royal jewelry collection. She wore long diamond earrings with glittering aquamarine briolette drops. You’ll surely recognize these: they’re from the collection of Amalia’s great-grandmother, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.
Amalia has clearly also been paying attention to her mother’s stacked-bracelet jewelry philosophy. She’s wearing a gold bangle tipped with the letter A, as well as a bracelet with an evil eye charm.
In the evening, the family traveled to The Hague to be present for a performance at the Royal Stables by a Dutch band, the Streamers. The royal family hosted the concert, which was (appropriately) streamed online for the Dutch people to view.
A wardrobe and jewelry change came with the change of venue. Queen Maxima swapped out her golden jewels for diamonds, including large diamond stud earrings, as well as a necklace with a pendant featuring a blue gemstone. Princess Alexia, who often wears edgy, modern pieces, opted for a casual bracelet stack and a pair of statement earrings.
Queen Maxima also stacked a delicate evil eye bracelet with her watch. She wore her wedding and engagement rings on her left hand and her diamond ring on her right hand. The diamond ring, which you can learn more about here, was a gift from King Willem-Alexander to celebrate the birth of Princess Ariane.
Princess Amalia sparkled in a golden top and coordinating jewelry for the concert, including statement earrings, her bracelet stack, and a modern ring.
