In November 1987, the Prince and Princess of Wales made a visit to Germany. During the visit, they attended a dinner hosted by President Richard von Weizsaecker at his home in Bad Godesberg, a suburb of Bonn. Diana brought out a new suite of jewels for the occasion: the Sultan of Oman Sapphire Suite.
The suite of diamond and sapphire jewels were presented to Diana by the Sultan of Oman during the couple’s tour of the Middle East in November 1986. The modern set, with geometric crescent designs, included a necklace, a pair of earrings, and a bracelet. Diana wore them for the first time in public at this dinner, pairing them with the Spencer Tiara.
Here’s a closer view of the necklace, which gives you a clearer idea of the design and construction of the jewels.
Diana wore the complete Oman Sapphire Suite for the occasion: you’ll be able to see the necklace, earrings, and bracelet, worn on her left wrist, in this image.
The midnight blue velvet gown that Diana wore for the dinner probably also looks very familiar to you. And it should: it’s the famous Travolta Dress, made by Victor Edelstein. Diana debuted the dress at the White House in Washington, D.C., in November 1985, memorably dancing with actor John Travolta during the gala evening. The gown is now in the collection of the Historic Royal Palaces charity, which manages the public rooms of Kensington Palace, among other royal buildings.
