During an important official visit to neighboring Portugal in November 2016, Queen Letizia of Spain wowed in a sparkling green dress and dazzling royal emeralds. Here’s a closer look at this royal jewelry moment!
On the second day of the Spanish royal visit to Portugal in the autumn of 2016, Letizia wore a dark green dress embroidered with sparkling beads for a dinner in Lisbon. The dress was made by one of her favorite fashion designers, Felipe Varela.
With the dress, Letizia added a bit of extra sparkle. Her only major accessory was this pair of diamond and emerald earrings—but they provided enough dazzle on their own!
The modern earrings feature a decorative diamond stud, from which a diamond and emerald cluster is suspended as a pendant. The earrings look quite rigid in photographs, but if you look closely, you’ll see some movement in the jewels.
Letizia has been wearing the earrings for over a decade. They were originally worn by her mother-in-law, Queen Sofia, who seems to have placed them in Letizia’s collection (either as a gift or a long-term loan). On at least one occasion, in 2009, Letizia paired the earrings with the Prussian Tiara.
The emeralds in the earring are especially bright and luminous. The marriage here between modern design and precious gems makes the earrings a perfect fit for Letizia, whose taste has always tended toward the new and now.
