Queen Maxima of the Netherlands has access to the incredible jewelry collection owned by the Dutch royal family, but she also owns pieces of jewelry personally. That personal collection includes today’s jewels, Maxima’s convertible diamond and emerald earrings.
These earrings have been in Maxima’s jewelry box for around fifteen years. Their design is fairly simple: a pear-shaped emerald and diamond stud, from which two small round diamonds and a large pear-shaped diamond and emerald pendant are suspended. The pendants can be detached and worn separately as an independent pair of stud earrings. Maxima occasionally wears the smaller version, but you’ll usually spot her wearing the complete earrings.
She often wears them with pieces of diamond and emerald jewelry from the vaults. Some of her favorites include the tiara and jewels from the Dutch Emerald Parure, as well as Queen Emma’s Emerald Butterfly Brooch and the family’s incredible cabochon emerald pendant, which is the size of a small egg and has been in the royal vaults for over a century. In the photo above, Maxima wears the earrings with the brooch from the emerald parure and the emerald pendant for the 70th birthday celebrations for King Harald V of Norway in February 2007. She’s also wearing an emerald ring.
In April 2011, Maxima brought the earrings with her on an official visit to Germany. She wore them for a performance of the Dutch Royal Concert Orchestra at the Berlin Philharmonic, pairing them with the necklace, brooch, and bracelet from the Dutch Emerald Parure. She also wore some of the family’s diamond stars in her hair.
Maxima has continued to wear the earrings often since becoming Queen of the Netherlands in 2013. Above, in June 2014, she wore them for a dinner at the Loo Palace in Apeldoorn in honor of Prince Albert II of Monaco. She paired the earrings with the tiara and jewels from the emerald parure.
While Maxima often wears the earrings for gala occasions, she also pairs them with more casual ensembles. Here, she wears them with the butterfly brooch as she arrives for the traditional New Year’s Reception at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam in January 2016.
A few months later, she wore the smaller setting of the earrings with the butterfly brooch for an international conference on transgender health care in June 2016.
During a visit to Australia in November 2016, Maxima wore the complete setting of the earrings, as well as the brooch from the emerald parure and the emerald pendant with a diamond necklace, for an outing at the famous Sydney Opera House.
The earrings and the butterfly brooch accompanied Maxima on a visit to the organic trade fair in Zwolle in January 2018…
…and the earrings also joined her on a visit to Utrecht in October 2018, where she helped celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Leidsche Rijn area.
In May 2019, Maxima wore the earrings for the opening of the Hof van Nassau nursing home in Steenbergen, where she posed for pictures with some of the residents.
One of the most recent appearances of the earrings came just a few days ago, when Maxima wore them for a concert celebrating her 50th birthday. She paired them with the butterfly brooch (worn in her hair) as well as pieces from the emerald parure.
