Let’s wrap up our week of Sparkling Spotlight posts dedicated to Diana, Princess of Wales with a look at a personal favorite appearance: her modern, elegant outing at a gala dinner in Sydney in October 1996.
Diana arrived on the red carpet at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on October 31, 1996, for a fundraising gala for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. She wore a Versace gown that some reporters described as “electric blue,” with a matching clutch bag and shoes.
With the one-shouldered gown, Diana wore several favorite pieces of jewelry set with diamonds, pearls, and aquamarines. (You can read all about Diana’s aquamarine collection here!)
She wore her diamond and pearl drop earrings, with the horseshoe-and-laurel stud and the round pearl drop. (These earrings are now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, who uses a different pearl dangle with them.) On her left wrist, she wore a five-stranded pearl bracelet with a rectangular aquamarine clasp. The other side of the bracelet features a diamond floral claps. The piece had been in her collection since the early 1980s.
Diana finished off the look with her large aquamarine ring. The Asprey ring was a gift from one of Diana’s close friends, Lucia Flecha de Lima. Today, the ring is worn by the Duchess of Sussex.
