With her famous blue eyes, it’s no surprise that Princess Diana was an enormous fan of sapphires. Her jewelry collection included numerous important pieces set with the stone, from her engagement ring to her famous choker necklace. Today, we’ve got a look at an early appearance from one of her sapphire demi-parures.
In April 1983, the Prince and Princess of Wales were in the midst of a lengthy tour of Australia. It was the couple’s first major royal tour together (and they were famously joined by their baby son, Prince William, during the trip). For a reception at a hotel in Brisbane, Diana stepped out in one of her favorite pink evening gowns, a Victor Edelstein creation. She accessorized with metallic shoes and a coordinating bag.
Diana’s jewels picked up on the silver tones of her other accessories. She wore the diamond-encrusted Spencer Tiara, a loan from her father, Earl Spencer.
With the tiara, she wore the suite of diamond and sapphire jewels that had been given to her as a wedding present in 1981 by Crown Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia. She wore the necklace, earrings, and bracelet from the set for the Brisbane reception.
Diana’s sapphire engagement ring completed the look. The sapphires, the pink dress, and the yellow ribbon of the Queen’s Royal Family Order made for an interesting and memorable color combination on the young princess.
