During her husband’s reign, Queen Sofia of Spain was a glittering fixture on the state banquet circuit. Today, we’ve got a look at a diplomatic set of sparkling sapphires from her collection.
King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, and Prince Felipe welcomed King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to Spain for a gala dinner at the Royal Palace in Madrid in June 2007. Queen Sofia wore a light blue dress with sparkling embellishments for the occasion, along with the light blue and white sash of the Order of Carlos III.
For the visit, Queen Sofia wore jewelry gifts from the Saudi royals, mixed with heirloom jewels from the Spanish royal vaults. She combined pieces set with diamonds, pearls, and sapphires with her blue dress. Her tiara is the diamond and pearl loop tiara that once belonged to Queen Maria Cristina. The diamond bracelet that Sofia wore on her left wrist belonged to Queen Ena; it’s one of the joyas de pasar.
Sofia also wore a modern diamond necklace from her collection. She has sometimes worn the necklace with a pear-shaped pearl gray pendant. The diamond fleur-de-lis brooch that she used to secure her order sash has also been in her collection for years.
She finished off the look with a set of sapphire and diamond jewels that was reportedly a gift from a member of the Saudi royal family. (Sofia’s collection includes numerous Saudi jewels, thanks to a close friendship between the Saudi royals and King Juan Carlos.) The set includes dramatic statement earrings and a sapphire and diamond bracelet (worn on her right wrist). Sofia also wore a sapphire and diamond cocktail ring on her left hand.
Here’s another view that shows the earrings and bracelet in more detail.
The overall look was dazzling. Sapphires really do look fantastic on almost every person, and in combination with lots of other gems!
