Today, the Spanish royals will embark on their first state visit to Sweden since the 1970s. The program for the first day of the trip includes a gala dinner at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, so we should be seeing major tiaras later on today! I’ll publish a full rundown of all the jewels on Thursday morning, but before that, let’s look back at Queen Letizia’s last tiara appearance in Sweden—and do some guessing about the tiaras we’ll see tonight!
The last time we saw Queen Letizia wear a tiara during a visit to Sweden came in June 2010, at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden in Stockholm. The royal wedding was a tiara affair for the bride and the guests, and Letizia wore dazzling diamonds and an elaborate evening gown for the occasion.
Queen Letizia wore a blush pink evening gown for the wedding which was adorned with appliqued flowers. She wore matching shoes and carried a matching handbag and coordinating shawl. She also wore the diamond star and blue and white sash of her highest Spanish royal order, the Order of Carlos III. (She’ll likely receive the Order of the Seraphim ahead of this evening’s dinner.)
Queen Letizia wore a mix of heirloom and personal jewels for the wedding. Atop a complicated hairstyle of braids and curls, she placed the Spanish Floral Tiara. The nineteenth-century tiara originally belonged to Queen Maria Cristina of Spain, the Habsburg archduchess who married King Alfonso XII in 1879. He offered her the classic diamond floral tiara, which was made by the British jewelry firm J.P. Collins, as a wedding present.
Here’s a side view of the tiara with Queen Letizia’s hairstyle from the Swedish royal wedding. With the tiara, Letizia wore her own diamond wedding earrings. (She’s speaking here with Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, who wore the Brabant Laurel Wreath Tiara with diamond floral jewels for the wedding.)
Felipe sweetly helped Letizia put on her wrap as the royals watched the festivities outside the palace after the wedding. The photo gives you a brief view of something unusual: Letizia wearing her diamond engagement band and gold wedding ring (on her right hand) and her Bulgari Parenthesis ring (on her left). It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Letizia wear her engagement and wedding rings on a regular basis.
Letizia finished off the look with her Cartier diamond column bracelet, worn on her left forearm, and the central element of her fleur-de-lis tiara, used as a brooch to secure her order sash.
Which tiara do you hope to see Letizia wearing for tonight’s dinner? And which Swedish royal jewels do you hope to see on the Bernadotte ladies for the event?
