Get excited, everyone: we’ve got a royal/royal state visit coming up this week! On Tuesday, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands are heading to Oslo for a state visit with King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. Queen Maxima has made several sparkling visits to Norway over the past two decades, and today, we’ve got a look at some of the tiaras and jewels she’s worn for past visits.
Fun fact: one of Maxima’s very first tiara appearances took place in Oslo! In August 2001, between her royal engagement and her royal wedding, Maxima Zorreguita Cerruti attended the wedding of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway alongside her fiancé, the Prince of Orange. For the wedding, which was a white-tie-and-tiaras affair, Maxima wore the diamond base of the Antique Pearl Tiara without its pearl toppers. She paired it with other pearl and diamond jewels from the Dutch royal collection, as well as her unique orange diamond engagement ring.
In May 2002, a few months after their royal wedding, Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima were back in Norway to celebrate the wedding of Princess Martha Louise and Ari Behn. For a dinner party in Trondheim two days before the royal wedding, Maxima wore diamond floral earrings and her diamond wedding bracelet.
On the eve of the royal wedding, Willem-Alexander and Maxima attended a reception hosted by the Norwegian government in Trondheim. Princess Maxima wore festive beaded earrings and her ruby, sapphire, and emerald tennis bracelets for the occasion.
For the royal wedding on May 24, Princess Maxima sparkled in an exuberant orange gown with her own wedding tiara, the Dutch Star Tiara. She paired it with dazzling diamond drop earrings and the elegant Dutch Diamond Trellis Necklace.
Princess Maxima wore pearls and the Dutch royal family’s diamond crescent brooch in March 2006 for the christening of her godson, Prince Sverre Magnus of Norway, held in the chapel at the Royal Palace in Oslo.
In February 2007, Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima joined in the royal celebrations for King Harald V of Norway’s 70th birthday. For an event at Oslo City Hall, Maxima, who was expecting Princess Ariane, wore diamonds and emeralds. These included her own diamond and emerald earrings, a diamond ring, and the brooch from the Dutch Emerald Parure with the large cabochon emerald pendant.
The next evening, Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima attended a gala dinner at the Royal Palace in Oslo to continue the birthday celebrations. Maxima piled on the diamonds and pearls, including the full setting of the Antique Pearl Tiara, the pearl bangle bracelet, pearl drop earrings, and Queen Sophie’s Strawberry Leaf Brooch. She also secured her wrap with two diamond ribbon brooches from the family collection.
In October 2013, the newly-inaugurated King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands made an official visit to Oslo. Queen Maxima wore the Dutch Fire Opals for their meeting with King Harald and Queen Sonja at the Royal Palace.
Some of Queen Maxima’s most recent bejeweled appearances in Oslo came in May 2017, during the joint 80th birthday celebrations for King Harald and Queen Sonja. For a gala dinner at the Royal Palace, Maxima sparkled in the Dutch royal sapphires. She wore Queen Emma’s Sapphire Tiara and Sapphire Brooch for the occasion, paired with the family’s Sapphire Figure-Eight Earrings. She completed the look with both of Queen Emma’s Sapphire Bracelets.
The following evening, for a gala dinner at the Opera House in Oslo, Queen Maxima wore even more family sapphires. She pinned Queen Wilhelmina’s Sapphire Brooch at her waist. She also showed off the versatility of the family collection, wearing the earrings from the Mellerio Ruby Parure with sapphire drops, and adding sapphires to the Dutch Diamond Trellis Necklace.
