Longtime readers here will know that I’m a big fan of classic jewelry showing up on the red carpet. So you can imagine my delight when I noticed a trend for classic diamond necklaces while watching the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend! Here’s a look at a few of my favorites from the event.
Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) wore an ultra-classic diamond necklace from De Beers with a pink Valentino gown for the ceremony, where she won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. De Beers posted a great photo of the standalone necklace on their Instagram after the show. I love this necklace—it looks like it could have come out of any classic royal jewelry collection.
Catriona Balfe (Belfast) favors sleek, sharp looks, and this yellow gold and diamond necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels certainly fits her style. She wore the necklace with a Saint Laurent gown and teeny-tiny diamond stud earrings. The necklace, which comes from the VC&A À Cheval High Jewelry collection, can also be taken apart and worn as bracelets.
Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show) loves a classic piece of diamond jewelry for red carpet occasions, and she didn’t disappoint at this awards show. She wore diamonds from Cartier, including an intricate necklace with an impressive pendant, with a dress by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli. The necklace’s design looks to me like a modern take on classic geometric Art Deco design motifs.
Reese Witherspoon wasn’t the only star on the red carpet wearing Cartier. Jada Pinkett Smith, who accompanied her husband, Will Smith (King Richard), also wore a fantastic Cartier bib-style diamond necklace with a Gareth Pugh gown. The shape of the necklace will probably ring a bell for other royal jewelry lovers—it’s very reminiscent of the amethyst, turquoise, and diamond bib necklace made by Cartier for the Duchess of Windsor.
Also in Cartier: Elle Fanning (The Great), who wore a diamond necklace from the firm with a gorgeous morganite pendant. The necklace added a little extra feminine flair to her Gucci tuxedo ensemble.
Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) reached for classic diamonds for the evening as well. She accessorized her Oscar de la Renta gown with diamonds from Bulgari, including one of the firm’s signature Serpenti necklaces.
Though her style is famously eccentric, you can often count on Lady Gaga (House of Gucci) to bring out major, important jewelry pieces for big industry events, because she’s an ambassador for Tiffany & Co. (We all remember the Tiffany Diamond moment at the Oscars, right?) For Sunday’s awards ceremony, she paired an incredible diamond, platinum, and yellow gold floral necklace with a gown by Armani Privé. The necklace, from the 2022 Tiffany Blue Book Collection, is a Jean Schlumberger design dating to the 1950s.
One of the more unexpected necklaces on the SAG red carpet—and maybe my unexpected favorite for the evening—is this modern necklace worn by Kim Joo-ryoung (Squid Game). With a gown from Zimmerman, she wore a necklace and matching earrings featuring enormous gemstones in an ultra-modern setting. The unusual, unconventional setting of the jewels makes me think that they could be from Taffin, the jewelry brand founded by James de Givenchy, nephew of the legendary fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy.
UPDATE: Reader Lila has correctly identified the necklace and earrings as pieces from Swarovski’s “Harmonia” collection. You can see the necklace on the company’s website here!
