We’ve got a little state visit sparkle to enjoy, everyone! Here’s a look at the jewelry we saw on the first day of the Austrian state visit to Belgium.
On Monday, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians welcomed President Alexander Van der Bellen and First Lady Doris Schmidauer of Austria to Brussels for the start of a three-day state visit.
The royals and the presidential couple took part in traditional welcome ceremonies outside the Royal Palace in Brussels.
Inside the Royal Palace, the President and the First Lady signed a guest book.
For the first events on the state visit program, Queen Mathilde wore an ensemble featuring shades of dusty rose and light brown.
She coordinated with a pair of earrings featuring a gemstone in a coordinating shade of brown.
Here’s a closer look at one of the earrings. You’ll note the large cabochon gemstone here bordered in braided gold.
She also wore a bracelet with charms on her left hand, as well as the new diamond and blue gemstone ring that she’s worn on several occasions recently, including an official visit to the Middle East.
I should also mention that First Lady Doris Schmidauer wore a really fun pair of statement earrings for the official welcome ceremony.
In the afternoon, the Queen and the First Lady made a visit to the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo.
And in the evening, the royals hosted the presidential couple for an official dinner at the palace in Laeken. No tiaras this time: the dress code was far less formal, with the men in business suits and the women in dresses. I know some will surely be disappointed at the lack of major gala jewels, but given the current situation in Belgium (where many people were injured or killed in an awful incident this weekend) and in Europe more generally (where the Russian invasion of Ukraine is tragically continuing), a less extravagant event was surely the sensible choice.
Queen Mathilde wore an evening gown with a vivid floral print in shades of white, pink, and purple, plus matching accessories, for the dinner.
She continued the pink theme by wearing a gorgeous pair of earrings set with diamonds and pink gemstones. Initially, I was going to guess that these were morganites, but the more I look at them, the more I think they could be pink topazes. What do all of you think?
She also wore a matching ring set with diamonds and an oval pink gemstone. Lovely!
