Queen Anne-Marie, the Danish princess who was once Queen Consort of the Hellenes, has a jewelry collection suited for the daughter, wife, and sister of monarchs. Today, we’ve got a closer look at her royal rubies, worn in Oslo for a special birthday celebration.
Queen Anne-Marie was part of a large royal gathering in May 2017 celebrating the 80th birthdays of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. She arrived for a gala dinner at the Royal Palace wearing a blue evening gown with a pink flower embellishment.
Anne-Marie walked into the dinner beside Princess Mabel, sister-in-law of the King of the Netherlands. Mabel wore the Pearl Button Tiara and additional diamond and pearl jewels for the occasion. You can read about all of the grand jewels worn for the dinner in our previous articles, found here and here.
The evening also included a balcony appearance at the Royal Palace. Queen Anne-Marie was in a group that included her sister, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (wearing the Danish Floral Aigrette); her eldest son and daughter-in-law, Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie-Chantal (wearing the Miller Fringe Tiara); her second son and daughter-in-law, Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana (wearing the Antique Corsage Tiara); and her nephew and niece, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark (wearing her Edwardian Tiara).
Queen Anne-Marie wore the tiara and jewels from her diamond and ruby parure for the occasion. The Ruby Olive Wreath Tiara and its accompanying pieces originally belonged to Queen Olga of the Hellenes, the Romanov grand duchess who married King George I in 1867.
Queen Olga bequeathed the rubies to her son, Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark. His wife, Princess Nicholas, wore the rubies often, as did two of their daughters, Princess Olga of Yugoslavia and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. Olga later sold the rubies to her royal cousins, King Paul and Queen Friederike of the Hellenes. In the 1960s, Friederike passed them on to her daughter-in-law, Queen Anne-Marie, who still owns and wears them today.
For the gala dinner in Oslo, Anne-Marie wore the tiara, earrings, necklace, and brooch from the suite. She also added a ruby and diamond bracelet on her right wrist and wore a ruby and diamond cluster ring on her right hand.
