Red is definitely the Queen of Spain’s power color! Queen Letizia’s jewelry box is full of sparkling jewels set with royal red rubies, from major statement earrings and heirloom jewels to modern pieces. Here’s a look at some of the most impressive jewels from that group.
Shortly before her own royal wedding in 2004, Letizia wore a dramatic red dress with diamonds and rubies for the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. The ruby and diamond dress clips she wore were family heirlooms: wedding gifts given to the Countess of Barcelona, Felipe’s grandmother, in 1935. She also wore a pair of more modern ruby and diamond earrings, which were loaned to her by Queen Sofia.
Letizia has worn the earrings on other occasions as well. Here, she wears them during the Spanish state visit to Japan in April 2017.
And here, she wears the earrings for a state dinner during the President of Slovakia’s state visit to Madrid in October 2007. She paired the earrings with the Prussian Tiara and a spectacular diamond and ruby necklace.
To my eye, the necklace worn for that Slovakian state dinner looks to be a companion piece to these fantastic diamond and ruby earrings. Here, Letizia wears the earrings in February 2017 in Madrid.
A few months later, in April 2017, she wore the eye-catching diamond and ruby earrings for a private birthday celebration in The Hague for King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.
For that 2007 state dinner, Letizia also wore one more piece of ruby and diamond jewelry: an interesting bracelet, worn on her left wrist.
She’s worn the same bracelet on other occasions, including this outing at the Princess of Girona Awards in June 2018.
Queen Sofia has also loaned another pair of fantastic diamond and ruby earrings to her daughter-in-law. The earrings, part of a set gifted to Sofia by the Saudi royal family, depict a diamond-set dove carrying a ruby wreath in its beak. (The suite also includes a matching necklace.) Letizia wore the earrings for the first time in April 2017 during the state visit to Japan.
Queen Letizia wore the same earrings in December 2018 for an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution.
Letizia made a statement with a pair of enormous diamond and ruby earrings at the Princess of Asturias Awards in October 2019. The earrings feature large cabochon rubies set in double clusters of diamonds.
But although Letizia has more than one pair of large statement earrings set with rubies, she most often reaches for a smaller pair of ruby earrings with a simpler design. These earrings feature cabochon ruby drops in a modern diamond setting. She’s worn them on countless occasions, including this appearance in San Antonio in June 2018.
I particularly love this picture of Letizia wearing the earrings during a rainy visit to La Rinconada in May 2016. Ruby red is most certainly her color!
