This week, the Spanish royal family headed to Asturias for the annual Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony and celebrations, and there were plenty of diamonds to go around!
The festivities began with a concert at the Prince Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo on Thursday evening, attended by the King and Queen of Spain, the Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofia.
Queen Letizia wore diamond-encrusted hoop earrings with a black velvet Teresa Helbig dress for the occasion.
Princess Leonor, who celebrates her 17th birthday on October 31, was vibrant in a bright pink suit for the concert.
Her younger sister, Infanta Sofia, chose a silky dress in a bright shade of teal.
On Friday morning, the family gathered at the the Reconquista Hotel in Oviedo for a series of audiences.
The women of the family wore neutral colors for the audiences, sticking with black, white, and navy.
Queen Letizia wore an elegant patterned dress that longtime readers of The Court Jeweller may have quickly recognized.
That’s because we previously saw Letizia wear the dress on Garter Day at Windsor Castle in June 2019, when King Felipe was formally invested as a Knight of the Garter by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
On that occasion, Letizia accessorized with Queen Ena’s diamond earrings and a diamond floral brooch.
For the audiences in Asturias on Friday, she wore her Australian pearl drop earrings with the dress. We recently saw her wear these earrings on National Day, and we discussed a little of their history in that article.
Princess Leonor wore a chic tweed jacket and skirt for the audiences on Friday morning.
A pair of classic diamond earrings, with a frame-and-drop pendant, peeked out from behind her hair.
The earrings were borrowed from Queen Letizia. Here, she wears the earrings in Valencia in October 2017.
Infanta Sofia chose a white dress with thin navy stripes for the morning’s events.
No jewels yet for 15-year-old Infanta Sofia. (There will be plenty of time for that eventually!)
On Friday afternoon, the royal family was joined by the King’s mother, Queen Sofia, for the awards ceremony.
Queen Letizia chose black and white again for her ceremony outfit. Her dress features heavy white beading and sequin embellishments at the neckline.
With the dress, she wore a pair of diamond floral chandelier earrings, a newer addition to her jewelry collection.
The earrings were a gift from the Emir of Qatar during his state visit to Spain in May 2022. She wears them here during the state dinner at the Royal Palace during the visit.
Here’s another view of the earrings from Friday’s awards ceremony (plus a glimpse of Letizia’s ever-present Karen Hallam ring).
As Princess of Asturias, Leonor is front-and-center at the awards ceremony these days, delivering remarks and handing out prizes. Here, she’s greeted by Polish historian and journalist Adam Michnik, winner of this year’s communication and humanities award, during the ceremony.
Leonor also wore bold black and white for the ceremony. Her dress features a palm print in black and white sequins.
She echoed the pattern of her dress with her choice of earrings for the occasion: diamond Chanel Plume earrings, borrowed from her mother.
Here’s Queen Letizia wearing the same earrings during her visit to Durham in April 2022.
And another view of Leonor wearing the Plume earrings during the awards ceremony.
Infanta Sofia also wore a dark dress covered in sequins for the ceremony, but again, no jewelry just yet.
Queen Sofia was a proud grandmother in a blue satin suit for the awards ceremony, accessorized with her trademark collection of assorted bracelets, necklaces, rings, and brooches.
She wore statement earrings with the ensemble, plus a pair of pins and pearls with two other chains layered beneath.
If the pins look familiar, that’s because Sofia wore the same two for last year’s awards ceremony in Oviedo.
