This evening, the Royal Palace in Stockholm glowed and glittered as King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden hosted a sparkling state banquet.
The King and Queen of Sweden hosted their guests, the King and Queen of the Netherlands, for Tuesday evening’s white-tie banquet. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are on the first day of a three-day state visit to Stockholm.
Both Queen Silvia and Queen Máxima wore pink for the banquet. Máxima’s gown is an elegant creation by one of her favorite couturiers, Jan Taminiau. The embroidered dress was previously worn during the 2019 state visit to India. Silvia wore the blue and gold sash of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, while Máxima made her debut in the insignia of the Order of the Seraphim. Silvia (and all of the Swedish royal ladies) also wore King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Royal Family Order.
The Swedish royal party also included several more members of the family: Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and Princess Christina and Tord Magnuson. Victoria wore a striking purple gown with a one-shoulder neckline, while Sofia chose an off-the-shoulder gown in dark forest green. Christina wore a gorgeous purple evening gown that we’ve previously seen her wear for the Nobel Prize celebrations. Victoria wore the sash of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, while Daniel, Carl Philip, Sofia, and Christina all wore the gold sash of the Dutch Order of the Crown.
The glittering jewels worn for the banquet were truly outstanding. Queen Máxima wore yet another setting of the Stuart Tiara. She’s clearly had lots of fun playing with the tiara’s various settings since her 2018 debut in the famous royal jewel. For Tuesday evening’s state banquet, she paired the tiara with Queen Wilhelmina’s Diamond Earrings.
She also wore diamond bracelets on both wrists. She finished off the look with another grand jewel: the Dutch Diamond and Pearl Devant de Corsage. The enormous brooch, which features a pink diamond, got lost a bit against the elaborate embroidery of her gown, but I’m sure it sparkled enormously in the candlelight at the banquet table.
Queen Silvia made a rare appearance in the grand Braganza Tiara for the banquet, pairing it with the Karl Johan Earrings and a gorgeous diamond rivière necklace.
She secured her order sash with one of the family’s diamond floral brooches, and she also wore diamond bracelets on her right wrist.
Crown Princess Victoria dazzled in the tiara, earrings, and brooch from the Napoleonic Amethyst Parure. She also wore a silver cuff bracelet, which we saw her wear at the recent Representative Dinner.
Princess Sofia opted for the emerald setting of her Diamond Palmette Tiara, paired with diamond and emerald earrings that she’s worn previously for the Nobels. She secured her order sash with a small diamond bow brooch.
Princess Christina sparkled in the Connaught Diamond Tiara, which also happens to have been her wedding tiara. (She wore it as a tribute to her late mother, Princess Sibylla, who particularly loved the jewel.) She also wore diamond earrings and secured her order sash with a diamond brooch. (Both the earrings and the brooch were also worn by Christina with the same gown for the 2017 Nobels.) The interesting gold necklace that she wears is actually a decoration called the King’s Medal. Her brother bestowed the honor on her in June 2021, in recognition of her “major non-profit social contributions.”
