On Monday, the King and Queen of the Netherlands arrived in Athens for a state visit with the President of Greece, and we were treated to two sets of fabulous royal jewels during the first day of the program.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands began their state visit to Greece on Monday, October 31. The first day of the program included both daytime and evening engagements.
They were greeted by President Katerina Sakellaropoulou of Greece during an official welcome ceremony at the presidential palace in Athens. The palace was previously a royal residence during the days of the Greek monarchy, which officially ended in the 1970s.
Willem-Alexander and Máxima also had a meeting with President Sakellaropoulou and her partner, Pavlos Kotsonis, following the welcome ceremony.
The royal couple’s day also included a meeting at the Dutch Institute of Athens.
And the couple had to take in one of Athens’s most famous landmarks, visiting the Parthenon at the Acropolis.
Máxima wore an ensemble in shades of dark orange and white. She wore heels for many of the daytime events, but she changed into sensible flats for the Acropolis visit (pictured here).
She coordinated her jewelry with her white dress and hat, wearing diamonds and pearls. She chose pearl and diamond drop earrings and pinned Queen Sophie’s Strawberry Leaf Brooch to her jacket.
She also wore her diamond family initial bracelet on her left wrist, plus her engagement and wedding rings on her left hand and a diamond and pearl ring on her right.
On Monday evening, President Sakellaropoulou hosted a state dinner for the royal couple at the presidential palace.
Josine Droogendijk tells us that the dress Máxima chose for the dinner was made by a Greek designer, Costarellos.
With the gown, she wore the miniature pin of Greece’s Order of the Redeemer, which she received on Monday. She also wore pieces from the grand Mellerio Ruby Parure, one of two complete suites of diamond and ruby jewels in the Dutch royal vaults. She wore several pieces from the set, including the tiara, the cluster earrings, the corsage ornament, and the bracelet.
She finished off the look with diamond bracelets on her left wrist (including her family initial bracelet) and a diamond and ruby ring on her right hand.
