What could be more festive at Christmastime than the combination of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and heirloom royal ruby and diamond jewels? We were treated to both last week, as Máxima joined in the taping of an upcoming holiday television special.
On Thursday, Queen Máxima headed to Amsterdam’s RAI Theater for the taping of the Kerst Muziekgala—the Christmas Music Gala—which will be aired on Dutch television on December 26. For the occasion, Máxima wore a festive mix of red pieces, including a blouse, a skirt, and a cape-style coat. She also wore red heels and carried a red clutch bag. Even her fingernails and toenails were polished red for the event!
With all that red, how could Máxima wear anything but rubies? Delightfully, she looked to the royal vaults for her bejeweled accessories for the gala. She wore the necklace and earrings from the Mellerio Ruby Parure, which has been passed down through five generations of the Dutch royal family. Appropriately, the set was a Christmas gift from King Willem III to his wife, Queen Emma, in December 1888.
Máxima finished off the look with a personal jewel: her diamond and ruby ring. The ring has a sentimental story, too: it was a gift to Máxima from King Willem-Alexander to celebrate the birth of their first daughter, Princess Amalia, in December 2003. (You can see a close-up of the ring in this article, which also features several other important rings from Máxima’s jewelry box.)
If you weren’t already in the holiday spirit, leave it to Máxima to bring some extra cheer and sparkle for all of us this Christmas season!
