Happy Birthday to the Queen of Sweden! Queen Silvia celebrates her 79th birthday today, and to join in the fun, I’ve got a look at one of her spectacular royal ruby moments.
In May 2013, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden traveled to the United States for an official visit. In Wilmington, Delaware, they attended a gala celebrating the 375th anniversary of the founding of the New Sweden Colony. The colony formally existed from 1638 until 1655, and it was an important step in establishing Swedish migration patterns to North America, paving the way for larger immigration waves that took place in the nineteenth century.
For the gala, Queen Silvia echoed America’s national colors: red, white, and blue. She wore an elegant blue gown with blue accessories, plus a cream-colored wrap and ruby jewels. She also pinned the King’s Royal Family Order to the ruffled neckline of her dress.
The neckline of the gown also provided a beautiful frame for the necklace setting of the King Edward VII Ruby Tiara. The diamond and ruby jewel was a wedding gift from King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom to their niece, Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden, in 1905. You can read more about the tiara (including the way that it converts to a necklace) in our previous article on the piece.
Silvia coordinated her jewels, wearing a pair of modern diamond and ruby earrings with the necklace.
She also added a diamond and gold bracelet on her right wrist and a gold Cartier Love Bracelet, plus her watch with two faces, on her left.
