The fourth spot on our countdown of the best royal jewelry moments of 2022 belongs to a year-long celebration in Denmark, marking Queen Margrethe II’s remarkable Golden Jubilee.
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark celebrated the 50th anniversary of her accession in January, marking the occasion with a series of low-key festivities. The bigger celebrations were postponed until later in the year because of the pandemic. But she still managed to showcase several important pieces of jewelry, including her Ruby Horseshoe Brooch, as well as her Diamond Daisy Brooch and matching earrings.
A book about the Queen’s jewelry was released to coincide both with the anniversary and with the grand display of her jewels at Amalienborg. A four-part television series, Dronningens skatkammer, was also aired to highlight important pieces of jewelry (read more about that series here, here, here, and here!)
The Danish jewelry firm Georg Jensen also commissioned a special new brooch in honor of Margrethe’s jubilee year. Copies of the brooch were sold to the public, and a portion of the proceeds were be given to Queen Margrethe’s and Prince Henrik’s Foundation, which supports cultural, scientific, and social projects.
A number of you were able to visit the gorgeous jewelry exhibition at Amalienborg, which showcased some of the most significant and sentimental jewels from Margrethe’s collection.
Several of you were kind enough to share your photographs of the exhibition with us as well! Here’s a look at the beautiful Danish Floral Aigrette, photographed by lovely reader Johanna. You can see more of her pictures here!
In September, the rescheduled gala festivities for the Golden Jubilee were finally held, but another world event—the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom—caused the postponement of some of the events. Both of the galas were held, however, with Margrethe appearing in fantastic royal diamonds from the Danish Royal Property Trust, including the Floral Aigrette, for a gala concert in Copenhagen. (More on those, plus all the other grand jewels worn by other attendees, over here!)
Margrethe wore her beloved diamond daisies once more the following day for a service of thanksgiving, which was also attended by friends and family.
The final event of the September jubilee celebrations was a fabulous gala banquet at Christiansborg Palace. Queen Margrethe wore the Pearl Poiré Tiara with the jewels from its married parure, and there were lots of other magnificent tiaras and jewels on display as well!
The final major event of the jubilee year was a luncheon at Copenhagen’s city hall, held in November. Queen Margrethe once again showcased her Diamond Daisy Brooch, an heirloom from her mother, and its matching earrings for the event.
