This weekend, the Prince and Princess of Wales headed to Cardiff, where they took in an rugby match—and Kate wore a patriotic English rose for the occasion.
Prince William and Princess Catherine arrived at Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday to attend the Wales vs England Six Nations Match.
Both the prince and the princess had a vested interest in the outcome of the match. William is the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, a role he has held since 2016. Last year, Kate was named patron of the England Rugby Football League and the England Rugby Football Union. Before the match, William joked that it was “going to be a very tense journey home” if Wales won the day, but Kate and England prevailed in the end.
During their visit to the stadium, the royal couple also officially opened the Sir Tasker Watkins Suite, which is named for the war hero and former Welsh Rugby Union president.
They also had the opportunity to chat with injured players who are supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust.
Kate went with a patriotic color palette for the match, wearing a red and white houndstooth-print coat from Catherine Walker.
The coat has been in the princess’s closet for five years. She debuted it in Stockholm in January 2018 during the royal tour of Sweden and Norway. At the time, she was expecting Prince Louis. The coat has since been altered to fit her present silhouette.
For the 2018 outing in Stockholm, Kate paired the coat with maroon accessories and pearl drop earrings from In2Design. On Saturday, she wore the coat with black and white accessories and diamond earrings from her jewelry box, as well as a meaningful rose pin.
She reached for the diamond Empress earrings from Mappin & Webb for Saturday’s rugby match.
The earrings and their matching necklace have been in Kate’s jewelry box for several years. Here, at Hampton Court Palace in 2016, she wears the earrings and necklace together.
For Saturday’s match, Kate pinned a small rose brooch to the collar of her coat.
Here’s a close-up of the details of the pin, which appears to be made of silver with red enamel accents.
The rose is the emblem of England Rugby. In the photograph above, taken when Kate participated in an England rugby training session in February 2022, you’ll spot the logo on her shirt.
We previously saw Kate wear the brooch version of the emblem in October 2022, when she made a video message of support for the women’s England team ahead of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
As always, on Saturday Kate finished off her jewelry look with a trio of rings: her iconic diamond and sapphire engagement ring, her Welsh gold wedding band, and her diamond eternity band.
