April is the month for showcasing diamonds, and Sotheby’s has a particularly spectacular one coming up for sale later this year. Here’s a closer look at the Eternal Pink Diamond, which could be yours if you have a few extra million bucks laying around!
We’re coming up on Magnificent Jewels season at the big auction houses, and Sotheby’s unveiled a major pink diamond last week that will be included as part of their June sale in New York.
Complete lot notes for the June 8th auction aren’t yet available, but a press release from Sotheby’s describes the diamond as “an electrifying Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink diamond weighing 10.57 carats.” It’s currently set in a ring with white diamonds flanking the large pink stone.
The auction house also offers a few details about the diamond’s provenance. “The 23.78 carat rough which yielded The Eternal Pink was mined by De Beers at the Damtshaa mine in Botswana,” they explain, “and was meticulously fashioned into an exquisite cushion cut—over a period of six intense months—by Diacore’s team of artisans, maximizing the diamond’s electric ‘bubblegum’ color to full potential.” Diacore, a company that acquires and crafts these big, spectacular gemstones, has been involved with many marquee sales, including the Pink Star Diamond auction at Sotheby’s in 2017.
The color of the Eternal Pink diamond really is remarkable, and Sotheby’s explains that the diamond was cut in specific ways to make that color even more impressive: “Polished as a cushion-cut, this gemstone boasts an attractive combination of facets that enhances the pink to be ‘sweeter’ to one’s eyes.”
The auction estimate for the diamond is set in the neighborhood of $35 million USD, which would be a price-per-carat record for a gemstone like this one. The previous record was set last October by the 11.15-carat Williamson Pink Star Diamond, sold at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. (We briefly discussed that diamond, along with numerous other large pink diamonds, in an article last autumn.) That diamond sold for $57.7 million, or approximately $5.2 million per carat.
Before the June 8 auction in New York, the Eternal Pink is hitting the road. It’s currently on display in Hong Kong, and then it will head to Taipei, mainland China, Singapore, Geneva, and Dubai to court potential buyers with very deep pockets.
Then, the gem will return to New York for a week of exhibitions at Sotheby’s there ahead of its auction. Sotheby’s has dubbed this diamond “an astonishing feat of nature.” What do you think?
