While we were all caught up in coronation fervor here two weeks ago, the stars were out at the annual Met Gala in New York. There were some sumptuous jewels on display, but perhaps none quite so eye-catching as the amazing diamond necklace worn by the pop star Dua Lipa.
The Met Gala is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s special exhibition and gala theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” paying tribute to the late fashion designer’s work. (I was surprised not to see his good friend, Princess Caroline of Monaco, on the guest list.)
There was lots of vintage couture from Lagerfeld’s archives on display, including this stunning white and black tweed ballgown from his 1992 fall collection for Chanel. Originally worn as a bridal look by Claudia Schiffer on the runway, the London-born singer Dua Lipa chose to wear the gown for this year’s Met Gala.
As one of the co-hosts of this year’s gala, Dua needed to make an extra-special splash, something she accomplished with the help of a particularly stunning accessory: Tiffany & Co.’s new Legendary Diamond.
The brilliant-cut white diamond weighs in at more than 100 carats. It was specially cut with a whopping 82 facets, far more than would normally be used in shaping a similar stone, to give it extra sparkle. This was the first time that the Legendary Diamond has been worn on a red carpet. Vogue reports that the diamond was “responsibly sourced from Botswana.”
For the outing, the Legendary Diamond was worn as a pendant on Tiffany’s Lucida Star Necklace. The necklace is made of platinum and set with 94 carats of diamonds.
If the Lucida Star Necklace looks familiar, there’s a good reason. It’s been worn separately for public events (including an outing at the Oscars on Anne Hathaway in 2011), and it’s also been worn multiple times with the famous Tiffany Yellow Diamond as a pendant.
Here’s the necklace worn with the famous 128.54-carat Tiffany Yellow Diamond on Lady Gaga at the Oscars in 2019.
With the necklace and pendant at the Met Gala, Dua Lipa and her stylists smartly kept the rest of her jewelry on the more minimal side by comparison—that is, if you can really call a Tiffany ring set with 9 carats of diamonds “minimal.”
Dua also wore diamond earrings and additional Tiffany Schlumberger diamond rings on her left hand. Overall, she looked thrilled to be wearing a beautiful ballgown and an incredible diamond. Who wouldn’t have been?
