The Princess of Wales headed to London on Tuesday, where she wore pearls for the reopening of the National Portrait Gallery.
Princess Catherine arrived at the National Portrait Gallery in London on Tuesday to celebrate the gallery’s reopening following a three-year refurbishment project.
Kate, who is a keen photographer with a degree in art history, has been the patron of the National Portrait Gallery since 2012.
During Tuesday’s visit, Kate viewed several new installations and exhibitions at the gallery, including a new set of bronze doors by the artist Tracey Emin.
She also toured an exhibition of images by the famed 1930s photographer Madame Yevonde, who took lots of pictures of royal subjects.
Kate also chatted with Paul McCartney and his wife, Nancy Shevell, during the visit. The gallery is currently hosting a special exhibition featuring hundreds of photographs taken by McCartney in 1963 and 1964 at the height of Beatlemania.
For the gallery opening, Kate made a bit of a quiet pun with her outfit choice, wearing a dress from the brand Self-Portrait. The clothing line, launched in 2013 in London by the Malaysian-born designer Han Chong, takes its name from Han’s desire to make his designs a reflection of the women who wear them.
Kate accessorized with Aquazzura heels and a Chanel clutch. (The National Portrait Gallery has partnered with the Chanel Culture Fund on an ongoing project, Reframing Narratives: Women in Portraiture, to enhance the gallery’s holdings of work by women. The Madame Yevonde archive is part of that effort.)
Kate finished off the look with a pair of earrings that have been in her jewelry box for more than a decade.
The earrings, made by the brand Heavenly London, feature resin pearl drops suspended from diamond-like crystals bezel set in rhodium-plated sterling silver. They’re still available, retailing on the company’s website for $120 USD.
Kate’s first public appearance in the earrings took place way back in July 2011, when she wore them to view the special exhibition of her wedding dress and jewels at Buckingham Palace.
One of her most high-profile outings in the earrings took place a year later, when she wore them during Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London.
We saw Kate bring the earrings out from the depths of her jewelry box earlier this year, wearing them for a visit to Wales in February 2023.
Here’s one more look at the earrings from today’s gallery reopening in London.
