The royals have arrived at Drottningholm Palace tonight for the opera gala performance and dinner celebrating King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Golden Jubilee, and we’ve got a look at their jewels and gowns from the arrivals!
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia led the royal guests as they arrived at Drottningholm Palace to attend a special performance by the Royal Swedish Opera in the palace’s historic theatre, followed by a private supper.
The dress code for the event, as expected, was black tie. The king wore a small round button, part of the insignia of the Order of the Seraphim, on his lapel. You’ll also notice it on some of the other men in attendance.
Queen Silvia wore an evening gown by Georg et Arend with royal diamonds, including the magnificent Vasa Earrings. The eighteenth-century earrings originally belonged to Queen Lovisa Ulrika of Sweden, and they feature unique, hand-carved diamond briolettes.
Crown Princess Victoria made a splash in an electric orange dress.
She accessorized with a pair of earrings from Shourouk.
The earrings have been in her closet for years. Above, a close-up from a previous outing. The earrings are set with crystals and stones in shades of orange and purple.
Victoria and Daniel brought along two surprise guests: Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar! Princess Estelle wore an altered version of an H&M dress from her mother’s closet.
Here’s a look at Crown Princess Victoria wearing the dress in June 2022.
With the green dress, Estelle wore a lovely little suite of jewels set with diamonds and peridots. The set includes earrings, a necklace, and a ring. She finished off the look with a pearl bracelet.
Princess Sofia wore a bright pink gown by Lars Wallin, which we previously saw her wear in April 2022.
A look at Sofia’s prior appearance in the Wallin gown.
This time around, she accessorized with antique jewels: the earrings and bracelet from the gorgeous Napoleonic Amethyst Parure.
Princess Madeleine arrived for the gala on the arm of her husband, Christopher O’Neill. (Apologies to Chris—the photographer caught him mid-sentence in virtually every photograph made available to license from the occasion.)
Princess Madeleine wore a strapless evening gown from Marchesa.
She accessorized with pearl drop earrings—this pair, I think—and a diamond bracelet, plus a brooch worn as a hair ornament.
I believe that’s one of the family’s diamond rose brooches in her hair.
Princess Christina and her husband, Tord Magnuson, also attended the gala.
With her gorgeous print caftan and wrap, Christina wore a pair of major colorful statement earrings and a matching necklace. Like Victoria’s earrings, these jewels also appear to be from Shourouk.
Several Scandinavian royals also made their way to Stockholm for the gala. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark was accompanied by her sister, Queen Anne-Marie, and by Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.
Queen Margrethe wore a tea-length floral gown with diamonds and pearls. She reached for her diamond and pearl wedding earrings, a multi-stranded pearl necklace, and the gorgeous diamond and pearl brooch given to Queen Lovisa of Denmark, who was born a Swedish princess, as a wedding present by Emperor Alexander III and Empress Marie Feodorovna of Russia.
Queen Anne-Marie wore one of her favorite blue gala gowns, recently donned for the wedding of her youngest son, Prince Philippos, in Athens. She accessorized with diamonds and pearls, plus her sapphire cluster brooch.
Crown Princess Mary wore her black-and-white floral gown from Lasse Spangenberg for the opera performance. We’ve seen her wear the dress before, with the scarf placed differently, during the French state visit to Copenhagen in 2018. This time, she paired the dress with diamonds and turquoises, including the fabulous antique royal turquoise earrings that she received from Queen Margrethe last year as a 50th birthday present. She also wore a turquoise ring, several bracelets, and another jewel in her hair.
King Harald and Queen Sonja were the only representatives on hand from the Norwegian royal family. Sadly, Crown Princess Mette-Marit has had to cancel the trip for health reasons, and Crown Prince Haakon will only be in Stockholm briefly on Friday. There were fewer good pictures of the Norwegian royals’ attire because they arrived by car, a concession to King Harald’s mobility issues.
But you can see the Queen Sonja was vibrant in red, accessorized with a pair of pearl drop earrings.
Here’s a slightly better look at the jewels, courtesy of court photographer Clément Morin.
Morin also gives us a brief look at the performance…
…and at the royal audience enjoying the moment.
