This weekend, the British royals celebrated the sport of rugby, with Princess Anne and Princess Catherine sparkling in royal jewels for a Windsor Castle podcast recording and a World Cup match in France.
On Wednesday, the Princess Royal and the Prince and Princess of Wales headed to the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle to participate in the recording of a special podcast episode.
They were the featured guests on an episode of The Good, the Bad & the Rugby, a podcast co-hosted by Princess Anne’s son-in-law, Mike Tindall. They were joined by Mike’s fellow podcast hosts, broadcaster Alex Payne and famed rugby player James Haskell.
Anne, William, and Kate are the patrons of the Scottish Rugby Union, the Welsh Rugby Union, and the Rugby Football Union, respectively. The episode was recorded to coincide with the Rugby World Cup, which is currently being held in France. The royals chatted about rugby, but they also talked about sport in general—their experiences playing various sports and games, the benefits of sport for all people physically and mentally, and their personal levels of competitiveness. (Spoiler alert: William and Kate are very competitive!)
For the podcast recording, Princess Anne wore gold earrings and a braided gold necklace, plus a Scotland-related brooch.
The silver brooch, which is set with four amethysts, features traditional engraving.
In recent years, Princess Anne has often been spotted wearing the brooch for events connected to Scottish rugby. Above, she wears it for a Six Nations match between Scotland and France in Edinburgh in March 2020.
And here, she wears it for a Six Nations match between Scotland and Ireland in Edinburgh in March 2023.
For Wednesday’s podcast recording, the Princess of Wales wore subtle gold jewelry with her patterned jacket.
She wore two necklaces from the British jewelry designer Daniella Draper: the Gold Three Star Necklace and the Midnight Moon Necklace. The latter features three small diamond stars and is engraved with the initials of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
On Saturday, Kate flew to France to attend the Rugby World Cup match between England and Argentina. She was accompanied by Sir Bill Beaumont, the former England captain who is now the Chairman of World Rugby.
England won the match, and Kate met with members of the team afterward.
For the match, Kate wore a white trouser suit. What Kate Wore tells us that the suit was made by Alexander McQueen.
With the all-white outfit, Kate wore one of her very favorite suites of jewelry: the Empress Mini Necklace from Mappin & Webb, plus the coordinating earrings from the set.
Kate’s had the Empress pieces in her jewelry box for nearly a decade. She wears the pieces separately on occasion, but often she wears them together. Her debut in the complete set took place at Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015.
She’s chosen the set often for sporting-related engagements, including an appearance at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022.
She’s also worn the earrings for a rugby match in the past: the Six Nations match between England and Wales in Cardiff in February 2023.
For that Six Nations match in February, Kate pinned a small rose brooch to her jacket. The rose is the emblem of England Rugby.
She also wore the same pin for a video message of support for the women’s England team ahead of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in October 2022.
And if you look closely, you’ll see that she pinned the rose brooch to her jacket lapel for the World Cup match in Marseille this weekend, too.
