On Friday, the Spanish royals headed to Oviedo for a glamorous annual event: the Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony.
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofia, and Queen Sofia of Spain were all present for this year’s awards ceremony. The awards, founded in 1981, are awarded annually to individuals or organizations from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs. The prizes take their name from the title used by the heir to the Spanish throne. Originally, they were the Prince of Asturias Awards (when Felipe held the title), but now that Leonor is the heir, they’re the Princess of Asturias Awards.
There were numerous impressive honorees at this year’s ceremony. Probably the most notable was the American actress Meryl Streep. Above, Leonor presents one of the prizes to Streep during the ceremony.
King Felipe and Princess Leonor both delivered remarks during the ceremony as well.
Here’s a look at the royal family arriving at the theater ahead of Friday’s prize presentations.
Queen Letizia and Infanta Sofia were both elegant in black-and-white looks for the occasion. Letizia wore a dress from one of her favorite designers, Carolina Herrera, while Sofia chose a dress from the brand Cardié.
Queen Letizia accessorized with an eye-catching pair of pavé-set diamond hoop earrings, plus her Coreterno ring.
Queen Sofia was elegant in a kimono-style jacket from The Kooples, while Princess Leonor wore a classic navy jacket and skirt from Moises Nieto.
Queen Sofia pared down her jewelry a bit for the occasion. Instead of the layered necklaces that have become her signature in recent years, she wore a single gold necklace with a floral design. She also added earrings with sparkling honey-colored pendants and a diamond bow brooch.
But it was the Princess of Asturias herself, fittingly, who had the biggest jewelry moment of the day.
Leonor borrowed a pair of diamond and aquamarine earrings from her mother’s jewelry collection for the occasion.
Here’s a look at Queen Letizia wearing the earrings in April 2016. The earrings come from Bulgari, and they can be worn with or without their diamond and aquamarine pendants.
Here’s one more look at the earrings on Princess Leonor during her speech on Friday. You’ll note that there’s also a little extra sparkle on her ear, courtesy of a small stud in a second piercing.
