On Thursday, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands made a pair of public appearances—and made a statement on each occasion with her bold clothes and jewelry.
Queen Maxima attended the UNLimited Festival, sponsored by the Association of Universities of the Netherlands, on September 28. The festival organizers explained that the event would allow several Dutch universities to “bring together new insights, best practices, [and] learned lessons to make universities more versatile and resilient.”
Maxima officially opened the festival and took part in conversations focusing on meeting the mental health needs of Dutch university students.
For the festival opening, Maxima wore a navy blue jumpsuit and red beaded earrings, both from one of her favorite designers, Natan.
She’s had the earrings, which are made of red beads and crystals, in her jewelry box for several years. Here’s a closer look at the design from a previous outing.
Maxima has worn the earrings on previous occasions, including this appearance at the Holland Festival in June 2016, when she paired them with a Natan dress.
The earrings are close cousins to another notable piece of Natan jewelry in Maxima’s collection: the famous “lobster” necklace, worn here in Australia in November 2016.
At Thursday’s UNLimited Festival, Maxima also wore some of her signature bracelets, including her diamond wedding bracelet and her diamond family initial bracelet.
She wore her engagement and wedding rings on her left hand and her diamond and ruby ring—a gift to mark the birth of Princess Amalia two decades ago—on her right.
On Thursday evening, Queen Maxima attended a special benefit gala in Amsterdam to mark the fifth anniversary of the Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology. The research hospital, founded in 2018, works toward a goal of curing every child with cancer and to improving quality of life for children both during and after cancer treatments. (The center is named after “Princess Maxima” and not “Queen Maxima” because the planning and funding for the hospital began before King Willem-Alexander ascended to the throne.)
For the anniversary gala, Maxima wore a unique gown from one of her go-to designers, Claes Iversen. The light blue dress features round cut-out designs edged in gold.
The gala was Maxima’s second appearance in the bold, modern evening gown. She previously wore it in Oslo during the Dutch state visit to Norway in November 2021.
On that occasion, Maxima accessorized with a pair of diamond earrings that belonged to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. For the gala, it was difficult to see the jewelry that she wore with the dress, but I think I can spot a gold cocktail ring on her right hand.
