On Wednesday, the Princess of Wales headed to the Design Museum in London for an important meeting connected to one of her personal causes—and wore sapphires that belonged to her late mother-in-law for the occasion.
Princess Catherine was at the museum for the Shaping Us National Symposium. The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood noted that the symposium would “bring together cross-disciplinary leaders, child and adult specialists, and global thinkers for the first time to consider how we grow, think and behave throughout life, in order to build resilience for the future.” Kate also delivered remarks during the event, telling those gathered that “if we can create a society which sees the child within every adult—and the adult within every child—we will finally start to change it for the better.”
For the symposium, Kate wore a trouser suit in a vibrant shade of grape made by Emilia Wickstead. She added navy shoes for a interesting bit of contrast.
The shoes also coordinated with the sapphire and diamond jewelry that Kate chose to wear for the gathering.
Her double cluster earrings feature cabochon-cut sapphires ringed with diamonds.
The earrings originally belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales, who wore them often both during and after her marriage to King Charles III. Above, she wears the earrings at the Royal Albert Hall in July 1991, pairing them with the pearl choker necklace featuring the large sapphire and diamond cluster clasp. (The cluster, which could also be worn as a brooch, was her wedding gift from the Queen Mother.) Diana also memorably paired the necklace and the earrings for an evening of dancing at the White House—including that famous twirl around the dance floor with John Travolta—in 1985.
We first saw Kate wear the sapphire and diamond earrings at Trooping the Colour in June 2022. Since then, she’s made several more outings in the jewels, including an appearance in Boston in November 2022, an outing at the Commonwealth Day service in March 2023, and another moment at Trooping the Colour in June 2023.
Kate finished off the look with Diana’s most iconic sapphire of all: the bright blue gem set in her engagement ring.
What do all of you think about the pairing of the sapphires with the purple suit? I like it, but I’d also like to see Kate delve into her emerald collection with this color. I think it’d be a fascinating contrast.
