Earlier this week, we were treated to royal tiaras in Oslo during a state visit from the President of Tanzania. Here’s a look at the lovely jewels we saw on the Norwegian royal ladies for the welcome ceremony and state banquet on Tuesday.
King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway led the royal party at the official welcome ceremony for President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania on her arrival at the Royal Palace in Oslo on Tuesday. They were joined by Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, as well as Princess Astrid, who celebrated her 92nd birthday on Monday.
For the welcome ceremony, Queen Sonja wore pieces from her extensive collection of modern gold jewelry, including gold earrings and a textured gold necklace. In honor of her guest, she also wore a gold brooch in the shape of the continent of Africa.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit kept things simple jewelry-wise with a pair of gleaming black pearl earrings.
And Princess Astrid was lovely in an array of jewelry pieces, including earrings with pale gemstone drops, a pearl necklace, several bracelets, and a sparkling brooch in the shape of a bee.
On Tuesday evening, the King hosted a state banquet for President Suluhu at the Royal Palace in Oslo. Above, King Harald sits between President Suluhu and Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, January Makamba.
Queen Sonja arrived for the banquet on the arm of her son, Crown Prince Haakon. She wore a vibrant pink evening gown from her collection with the insignia of the Order of St. Olav and King Harald’s Royal Family Order.
She accessorized with beautiful diamonds and pearls, wearing (the replica of) Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara in its complete setting. The tiara was made in the 1990s after the original, one of Queen Maud’s 1896 wedding gifts, was stolen from Garrard in London. For the banquet, Sonja also wore pearl drop earrings and a multi-stranded pearl necklace, plus one more important jewel that belonged to Queen Maud. The Drapers’ Company Brooch, with its eye-catching diamond and pearl scroll design, was also one of Queen Maud’s wedding presents more than a century ago.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit arrived for the banquet wearing a sparkling silver lace evening gown. (UFO No More tells us that it’s been in her collection for at least six years.) She also wore the sash and star of the Order of St. Olav and King Harald’s Royal Family Order.
Mette-Marit sparkled at the banquet in jewels from the family’s modern suite of diamond and amethyst jewels. She wore the tiara (which can also be worn as a necklace), the earrings, and the secondary necklace made by linking the bracelets from the set. She also added an impressive diamond ring on her left hand.
Fresh off her birthday celebrations, Princess Astrid arrived for the banquet wearing a beautiful gold lace evening gown and the insignia of the Order of St. Olav. She also wears medals and three Royal Family Orders, from the reign of her grandfather (King Haakon VII), her father (King Olav V), and her brother (King Harald V).
Astrid kept the gold theme going with her jewels as well. She wore the tiara, earrings, and brooch from the parure of golden jewels that belonged to her great-grandmother, Queen Sofia of Sweden. (We talked about all of Astrid’s fabulous heirloom tiaras earlier this week!) She also added a gold and diamond bracelet and a beautiful three-stranded pearl necklace to her ensemble for the occasion.
