Last week, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg celebrated her 68th birthday. In her honor, today we’ve got a closer look at an outing of the family’s sleek modern parure of jewels set with her aquamarine birthstone.
In June 2010, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg headed to Stockholm to attend the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden. The two were invited, of course, because Henri is a head of state, but they’re also extended family members. Henri’s grandmother, Queen Astrid of Belgium, was born a Swedish princess.
For a dinner held on the eve of the royal wedding, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore a dark, flowing gown, accompanied by diamond and aquamarine jewels.
She wore the earrings, necklace, and bracelet from the family’s aquamarine parure. The bracelet can also be set on a frame and worn as a bandeau-style tiara.
The set has a distinctive midcentury modern design feel, because that’s when it was made. It’s generally believed to have been commissioned for Grand Duke Henri’s mother, the late Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte of Luxembourg. The suite features heavy, rectangular aquamarines interspersed by diamond knots and dots. Pieces from the set have been worn by just about every princess in the grand duchy, but as Maria Teresa is a March baby, I’m certain that the gemstones have a particularly special place in her heart.
