Monaco put on the Ritz this weekend for one of its most glamorous annual events, the Rose Ball–and this year, the princesses of the Grimaldi family wore plenty of diamonds and sequins to match the gala’s disco theme.
The Bal de Rose is held annually in the glittering Salle des Étoiles of the Sporting Monte-Carlo as a fundraiser for the Princess Grace Foundation. Her daughter, Princess Caroline, is the chair of the foundation, and she regularly doles out the responsibility of planning the theme and decorations for the ball to one of her artistic friends. This year, the designer Christian Louboutin was tasked with the job, and he and Caroline chose a 1970s disco theme, complete with Gloria Gaynor performing “I Will Survive.”
Princess Caroline was joined at this year’s ball by five of her children and in-laws: Charlotte Casiraghi, Pierre Casiraghi and his wife, Beatrice Borromeo, and Princess Alexandra of Hanover and her boyfriend, Ben-Sylvester Strautmann. But most exciting of all was an appearance from an unexpected guest. Prince Albert II of Monaco, Caroline’s brother, was joined this year by his wife, Princess Charlene of Monaco.
It’s been more than a decade since we last saw Princess Charlene attend a Rose Ball. (She last attended in 2013, before The Court Jeweller had even been launched!) For this year’s glamorous disco moment, she chose a very appropriate ensemble: a sparkling sequin-encrusted jumpsuit from Elie Saab.
She accessorized with a pair of modern diamond earrings. UFO No More tells us that they come from one of Charlene’s go-to jewelry firms, Graff. (Also: don’t you love the little disco balls in the bouquets?)
Here’s a look at the earrings alone in a product image from the company. I really like the way that the earrings echoed the vertical lines of the sequins on the jumpsuit.
Princess Caroline also wore sequins, choosing a black sequined gown from her wardrobe archives.
She added even more sparkle with a pair of purple-pink earrings from her jewelry box. She’s had the earrings in her collection for years, and they’ve made occasions previously at the Rose Ball, the Red Cross Ball, and the National Day Gala. She also added a little extra bejeweled interest with a flower brooch, pinned at the plunging neckline of her gown, and a pair of sparkling rings.
Caroline’s daughters went with their usual design choices for the ball. Princess Alexandra was classic and elegant in a strapless black gown with a bow on the bodice, accessorized with a sparkling necklace and a pair of diamond and pink sapphire earrings borrowed from her mother. (UFO No More attributes them to Köchert.) The look doesn’t exactly scream “disco,” but it’s certainly lovely overall.
Charlotte Casiraghi wore a Chanel gown with minimal accessories. The embellishment on the gown’s bodice is part of the dress. She also added her necklace with the triangular diamond pendant, a piece she’s worn often throughout the years, and a diamond bracelet on her left wrist. This look (and Charlotte’s general style) fits better with the ’70s theme, I think.
And finally, Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi went for full disco fringe, wearing a golden gown and jewelry for the evening. The gown and accessories, of course, all come from Dior. (She’s an ambassador for the fashion house.)
