Happy Birthday to Princess Madeleine of Sweden! The younger daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia celebrates her 42nd birthday today, and we’re joining in the festivities with a look at a sparkling state banquet tiara appearance that took place five years ago this month.
On June 14, 2019, the Swedish royal family welcomed President Moon Jae-in of South Korea and his wife, First Lady Kim Jung-sook, to Stockholm for a state visit. On the first evening of the visit, the Bernadottes hosted a traditional state banquet for the presidential couple at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. The King and Queen were joined by their children and their spouses for the dinner, including Princess Madeleine and her husband, Christopher O’Neill.
For the state banquet, Princess Madeleine wore an elegant gray and gold ensemble. Her Carolina Herrera evening dress featured sparkling gold floral embroidery, echoed by her gold glitter clutch handbag and matching shoes.
Both Madeleine and Chris wore their usual orders and decorations for the white-tie banquet. Madeleine added the sash and star of the Order of the Seraphim and her father’s Royal Family Order to her ensemble, while Chris wore the neck ribbon and badge of the Order of the Polar Star and medals commemorating his father-in-law’s Ruby Jubilee and 70th birthday celebrations.
Madeleine added even more sparkle to her state banquet outfit with lots of diamond accessories. For the occasion, she wore her bridal diadem, the Modern Fringe Tiara, a classic jewel that can also be converted to be worn as a necklace. The tiara originally belonged to Madeleine’s mother, Queen Silvia, but after Madeleine wore it for her royal wedding in 2013, the tiara became one of her personal jewels.
More heirloom jewels from the family vaults were also added to her glittering ensemble. She secured her Seraphim sash with one of the family’s diamond bow brooches. She also wore the gorgeous diamond floral earrings that belong to the Bernadottes. A flexible modern lattice bracelet, worn on her left wrist, and her diamond engagement and wedding rings completed the jewelry look.
Here’s one more look at Madeleine’s jewels from her arrival at the state banquet. This overall look was an elegant win for me, but there is a small part of me that wishes she had tried out the Napoleonic Cut-Steel Tiara with the gown. That diadem would have coordinated nicely with the silver gray-and-gold colors of the dress, much like the famous H&M gown that Victoria paired with the tiara for the Nobels in 2016.
